SECTION SF 30 BLOCK 14 CONTINUATION PAGE

The following items are applicable to this modification:

SUMMARY OF CHANGES

SECTION C - DESCRIPTIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS

The following have been modified:

Q &A’s Amendment 01 Question and Answers Amendment 01

Q. 1. Is the actuator expected to be movable across the base similar to the cross head?

A. Actuator should be centered (approximately) in the base. Only movement of the actuator is the 6 inches of stroke (up and down). The crosshead (with load cell mounted on it) is moveable to a position above the base to allow for different heights of samples or fixtures that need to fit between the actuator and load cell.

Q. 2. Please provide examples and/or manufacturer names & descriptions of the desired upper and lower hydraulically operator wedge style grips, jaw faces for thin and thick flat samples, and small and large diameter round samples (minimum 4 complete sets of jaw faces)? Please provide information on how the samples are to be attached to the cross head and actuator - particularly in tension.

A. Wedge grips and jaw faces are available from Instron, MTS, Tinius-Olsen and probably a few other manufacturers, this is for informational purposes only, and is not an endorsement of any particular manufacturer. Grips need to have a capacity of at least the load rating of the test system. (20,000 lb. [pounds force] tension and compression).

The wedge grips are attached to the actuator and load cell, usually with a threaded attachment e.g. actuator, load cell and grips have large female threads, something around 1.5 to 2 inch diameter, and a high strength male to male threaded adapter is used between them. Grips may have a different thread than the actuator and load cell if required, so the male to male adapters would need correct corresponding threads on each side. Adapters must be rated for at least the load rating of the test system, and must be fatigue/cyclic rated, which requires rolled-threads (not cut threads) and special heat-treating. No pictures are available, as sample size, shape and complexity varies greatly.

Q. 3. Please provide a description of which piece of equipment must be able to operate on which power. For example, is the pump motor to operate on other that the 480 volt 3 phase system? If so, this will drive up the cost significantly. In addition, is the computer and controls expected to operate at 208 volt single phase power in addition to the 110/125 volt single phase power?

A. Building has 480 volt 3 phase, 208 single phase and 110/120 volt single phase power available. Typically the large hydraulic pump used for the actuator would run on the 480 V 3 phase, although this is not a strict requirement. A separate smaller hydraulic pump may be required for the hydraulic wedge grips, as often they run at higher pressure (10,000 psi) than the actuator (3,000 psi). This pump can be 208 or 110/120 volt.

The computer, monitor and other auxiliary equipment can be 110/120 V. If needed, controls, can also be low voltage, as long as they can plug into a 110/120 volt outlet, or receive power from another piece of equipment (e.g. switch to turn on pump might only be 5 volts, but it somehow receives its power from the 480 volt pump through a junction box, transformer, etc). These systems typically have several built-in safety systems to ensure the machine can be shut off safely in the event of an emergency. The control/test software also allows for limits and other safety settings to ensure test samples or personnel are not in danger.
