NUWC 2019 COLLABORATION WITH THE URI INNER SPACE CENTER

STATEMENT OF WORK

1.0 BACKGROUND

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport (NUWCDIVNPT) has established several educational programs to expose children to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). These STEM programs seek to develop NUWCDIVNPT future workforce by emulating a strategic model of ‘plant, nurture and produce’ developed by Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). NUWCDIVNPT objectives, based on this strategy, are three-fold: 1) to increase exposure to real-world STEM activities for students, 2) to increase interest in NUWCDIVNPT mission and its importance to national security for students, educators, parents and the public, and 3) to develop a pipeline of future STEM professionals for NUWCDIVNPT workforce.

Accordingly, NUWCDIVNPT student educational outreach effort spans a broad spectrum of age groups, beginning with middle schools and continuing through university graduate level programs. In order to expand its educational outreach to this diverse and broad audience, NUWCDIVNPT seeks to incorporate the capabilities and activities of the Inner Space Center (ISC) at the University of Rhode Island into its outreach program activities.

The ISC provides live video and audio communications feeds from oceanographic vessels conducting research and related activities. This permits NUWCDIVNPT’s diverse outreach program to share knowledge of current oceanographic STEM research projects, events and activities as they occur in near real time.

Since its opening, the ISC has supported a collaborative educational facility within the Undersea Collaboration and Technology Outreach Center at NUWCDIVNPT. This facility consists of integrated audio, video, and computer subsystems linked to the ISC through Internet2. Through this contract, the ISC will continue to collaborate with NUWCDIVNPT educational staff to upgrade and maintain the ISC systems in place for receiving the video/audio/data broadcasts.

2.0 SCOPE
