v1.2_JUNE2016
BRAND NAME SPECIFICATION
Cisco Switch Refresh
BACKGROUND:
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division, Newport’s (NUWCDIVNPT’s) RDT&E infrastructure is designed to meet its research and development needs to support both the Division's mission and its associated operational functions. The RDT&E infrastructure provides the command with internal network services and supports external network connectivity via the Defense Research and Engineering Network
(DREN). NUWCDIVNPT’s core infrastructure is comprised of previously procured Cisco routers and switches.
NUWCDIVNPT must adhere to Network Infrastructure Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) and Network Policy STIG to maintain or replace equipment for Information Assurance (IA) compliance.
NUWCDIVNPT’s Code 1041 requires purchasing Cisco Systems equipment to replace and upgrade existing Cisco hardware that has reached the End-of-Support (EoS). Without procuring these devices, the maintenance, IOS upgrades, and troubleshooting with vendor support will not be possible. This will eventually lead to a non-IA compliant network with a potential consequence of a shutdown. Scientists and engineers that depend on the network infrastructure for research and development will be unable to perform their work.

The Government’s minimum requirement is provided in the following table.

Description of Requirement/Specifications
Purchasing Cisco devices will support NUWCDIVNPT’s RDT&E infrastructure requirements and will ensure there are no compatibility or interoperability issues with the existing infrastructure. Only Cisco components will extend the lifespan of the current equipment and will significantly reduce the cost and time of managing, maintaining, and upgrading the current network.
Using another vendor’s hardware will make replacement of existing network hardware very difficult and in many instances impossible due to non-compatibility issues. Procuring Cisco devices will allow the current configuration and setup to be transitioned seamlessly without modifications and allows future upgrades to occur without replacing all of the equipment at the same time.
