4.6.10. Flow Direction: Flushing material from other parts of the system into large, low velocity flow regions or into clean portions of the hardware shall be avoided. Flushing procedures shall be sequenced and care taken to preclude flushing foreign material into the plate heat exchanger, end users, or other equipment specified by NSWCPD.
4.6.11. NSWCPD will provide guidance to the Contractor at a later date whether the system end users will be flushed.
4.6.12. Flow Volume: The minimum volume of the flush shall be equal to the internal volume of the component being flush tested. For piping systems, at least three times the volume of the system being flushed shall be used. The flow for this volume shall be continuous if practicable.
4.6.13. Filter Cloth: The filter cloth’s active filtering area shall be no larger than approximately 1 square foot and shall conform to the technical requirements of Ref (d). An installed 50 mesh corrosion resistant filter should be used for a re-circulating flush (with a new filter cloth supported thereon if
Type I flush acceptance criteria must be met). Detrimental material testing is not required for cloths used for outflushes.
4.6.14. Flushing Acceptance Criteria: After the completion of each flush, the effluent filter shall be visually inspected for cleanliness. Flushing is complete when two separate, successive flushes (minimum 6 hr duration each flush) conform to the acceptance criteria. When the material causing the flush to not meet the acceptance criteria is of a type normally found in a system, such as corrosion or wear products in a used system, flushing may continue until two successive acceptable flushes are obtained.
4.6.15. The flush is acceptable if the general appearance of the filter cloth bag upon inspection is that of a clean white cloth showing no more than slight speckling, soiling, or staining and the material on the filter cloth does not exhibit any of the following:
Fine hair-like sliver larger than 1/16” in any dimension;
Thin flake-like particle larger then 1/16” in any dimension;
Particle of other geometry, larger then 1/32” in any dimension;
Readily apparent (by visual inspection without magnification) quantities of unusual debris or substances, such as resin beads, abrasive grit, oil, grease, welding flux, pipe joint sealer, or preservative;
Visually apparent lint fibers greater than ¼” in length.
Note: New instrumentation provided with quality assurance documentation including verification that the instrument meets the cleanliness requirements above is acceptable in lieu of flushing.
4.6.16. A disconnected instrument that cannot be flushed by once-through or recirculating methods shall be flushed by either alternate filling or draining or flowing into the instrument through a small diameter tube. Instrumentation shall be flushed until the effluent is visibly clear when observing a static sample or no visible particles or staining is detected when passed through a filter cloth.
4.6.17. Verification of Cleanliness: After the flush acceptance criteria (sections 4.6.14 and 4.6.15) above is satisfied, the Contractor shall reinstall all equipment and instrumentation removed/jumpered for the flush, re-fill/vent the system as required with DI water, and then conduct a 2 hr (minimum) operational flush to demonstrate that the system cleanliness is maintained in the final system configuration. The final water sample(s) after the operational flush is complete must be free of color, oil, suspended solids, sediment, chloride (0.1 ppm, maximum), and conductivity (2.5 umhos/cm, maximum). NSWCPD will have the sample(s) analyzed by NSWCPD Code 60 lab to verify water quality readings by Contractor before Contractor is released from the requirements of this contract.
