Det Astor ATG Handheld Radios (FY19P13)
1.0. INTRODUCTION
Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Corona Range Systems (RS) Department, RS31, personnel are responsible for supporting Pinecastle Range Complex through the Systems Replacement and Modernization (SRAM) program. Pinecastle is in need of five (5) hand-held Air to Ground (ATG) radios, one (1) 50 Watt (W) base station, one (1) 20 W repeater and supporting equipment to facilitate ongoing training scenarios.
2.0. BACKGROUND
Currently, Pinecastle personnel are utilizing a combination of URC-200 radios with battery and a back pack for mobile air to ground radio communications during training events. These URC-200 radios are very old and are no longer supported with repairs. Pinecastle has procured some Thales radios and equipment, but not enough to replace the aging URC-200 equipment. All available URC-200 units need to be used as critical spares instead of mobile use. Purchase of additional Thales handheld ATG radios will provide additional spares for primary fixed ATG radios. A handheld ATG radio will allow flexibility in re-positioning ground Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) threat operators and provide communications real-time with the training aircrew. The 50 W base station allows communication over greater range than with the handheld radios alone, and the 20 W repeater also strategically increases the operational range around the repeater. Commander Strike Force Atlantic (CSFTL) personnel request use of mobile ATG radios during exercise evaluations at Pinecastle. The ATG can be used in a multitude of different operations to include Opposing Force (OPFOR) events, Convoy, Pilot Recovery, Close Air Support, MANPADS, Moving Land Target (MLT), and High Altitude Research Project (HARP) training.
Without new ATG radios, critical spares of the URC-200 radios will continue to be utilized and negatively impact the capability to support training if damaged. Continued use of the bulky URC-200 radios also limits mobility and effectiveness of support to the warfighter compared to more portable hand held ATG radios. Without the repeater and the base station, loss of communication during long range operations would negatively impact training support increasing operational risk to the warfighter.
Currently the Thales PRC6809 radios and associated support equipment are in use by the same team that supports Pinecastle. Additionally, personnel at Pinecastle have been trained to use and program these radios manually and through Thales Personal Computer (PC) programming software. In addition, the system at Pinecastle was designed based on the Radio Frequency (RF) coverage achieved by the Thales radio 50 W base station
