PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION

This Statement of Work (SOW) is written to procure a new Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) for the RS43 Branch.

BACKGROUND

RS43 is responsible for chemical analysis of explosive materials. DSCs and TGAs are two of the most common instruments used in thermal analysis. Purchase of these instruments will allow Expeditionary Systems Evaluation Division (ESED) to perform numerous chemical analysis tests, including, but not limited to, evaluation of endotherms, exotherms, purity, phase transitions, heat capacity chemical compatibility, moisture content, decomposition thermodynamics, and hydroxide reaction conversion estimations.

REQUIREMENTS

The DSC should be able to complete tests to the standard of ASTM E537-12 (reference (3)) Modulated DSC.

DSC must be supplied with the following criteria:

- Ability to apply sinusoidal temperature wave to sample: Amplitude of sine wave ± 0.01 to 3o C; frequency period from 10 to 200 seconds.

- Tzero® Heat Flow Measurement; The DSC must employ Tzero technology (as described in the following patents) for the most accurate measurement of heat flow: US Patents: 6,488,406, 6,431,747 and 6,561,692; Additional Patent Nos. EP 1136802, JP 4074441, 3936846, 3,936,847.

- The TGA should be able to complete tests to the standards of ASTM E2550-17 (reference (5) Thermobalance (Tru Mass) Furnace. The furnace should employ infrared heating with a ceramic IR absorber Hi-Res TGA; is defined as an advanced heater control technology.
