Statement of Requirements:

Statement of Requirements for Sliding Contact Tribometer

Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Naval Postgraduate School

1.0 Background/Introduction:

The sliding contact tribometer will be used to support NRP program on 3D printing and additive manufacturing. The tribometer will be used to evaluate the wear resistance of 3D-printed polymeric and composite materials, and compare how their durability during sliding contact wear compares to traditionally manufactured polymeric components. Tribometer will be used to measure structural properties that are more dynamic in nature and provide more insights on the structural reliability of 3D printed components. Many of these components are intended for use in submarine and other marine environments where corrosion and immersion testing would provide valuable insights. Tribometer will be multi-functional to allow friction behavior to be characterized with different counter-surface materials – including polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites.

2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:

1. The tribometer should be a turn-key system, requiring standard power provided by US electrical outlets. (less than or equal to 240 V)

2. System and data analysis should be able to be conducted in a Windows PC.

a. Data read-out and analysis software should be transferrable to multiple PC stations.

b. Analysis software should include data smoothing / noise reduction (e.g., continuous average, FFT, adjacent averaging).

3. Tribometer should have sliding rotary ball-on-disk configuration.

a. If reciprocating or pin-on-disk configuration is standard, rotary ball-on-disk module must be available.

b. Wear track radius should be variable, minimum should be no greater than 3 mm, maximum should be no smaller than 10 mm.

c. Counter surface holder should accommodate balls ranging in size from 1mm – 10 mm.

4. Should be able to accommodate sample size as large as a 75 mm diameter (~3 inch) disk.

Samples as small as s 10 mm diameter disk must be accommodated.

5. Lateral force sensor to measure real-time coefficient of friction (CoF). Data collection rate should be 60 Hz or higher. CoF should be displayed real-time during testing.

6. Displacement monitor to measure z-depth (wear/indentation depth) real-time.

7. Total time and sliding distance should be measured and recorded.

8. Minimum maximum rotation speed should be 500 rpm or greater.

9. Maximum minimum rotation speed should be 30 rpm or lower.

10. Minimum maximum load capability should be 40 N or higher.

11. Maximum minimum load capability should be 2 N or lower.

12. Friction and force calibration standards and/or procedures.

13. Tribometer should have enclosure to prevent pinch hazards during movement, and to reduce damage such a sample come loose during the test.

14. Base warranty should be for at least 3 yrs.

15. On-site installation and training should be included.

16. CLIN #0003: Optional module for corrosion testing should be available. Corrosion testing modulus should be able to measure electrochemical polarization curves (current vs. potential).

17. CLIN #0004: Optional module for immersion testing should be available. Immersion testing should be feasible using oil and aqueous solutions. Both surfaces of the tribocouple should be immersed in the fluid.

18. CLIN #0005: Optional module for high temperature testing should be available. High temperature testing module should have enclosed environment where both surfaces of the tribocouple are exposed to temperatures of up to 1000 C or higher.

CLINs 0003, 0004, AND 0005: THESE CLINS ARE UNFUNDED AND CAN BE EXERCISED AT ANY TIME WHEN NEEDED/BUDGET IS AVAILABLE. Period of Performance for optional CLINs: one year from date of award.
