Statement of Requirements
Broadband Active Sonar System for Measuring Scattering from the Ocean Environment Oceanography Department Naval Postgraduate School
1.0 Background/Introduction:
Acoustics is the primary means of remote sensing within the ocean volume and seafloor boundary at ranges greater than a few meters. Active sonars transmit acoustic energy, and sense the scattered energy using transducers. This means of sensing is employed in many naval systems, including torpedoes, minehunting systems, and long range antisubmarine warfare.
These systems must distinguish between targets (i.e. submarine, or mines) and the seafloor background, which causes false alarms. This project is focused on characterizing the scattering due to the ocean floor, ocean surface, and ocean volume in order to better understand false alarms in active sonar systems. This goal requires many measurements of bottom scattering over a diverse set of seafloor environments, over a broad range of frequencies (broad bandwidth), and over many angles.
Additionally, the same technology can be used to remotely sense the water column, primarily scattering by sound speed and density gradients, turbulence, and plankton. The system purchased under this contract will be used by the PI and students in the Oceanography department to measure bottom scattering over a variety of angles and frequencies on the seafloor, as well as scattering due to turbulence, plankton, and sound-speed and density contrasts within the ocean.
This instrument will be used to collect data on which NPS student theses will be based, as well as providing data to complete deliverables (articles in peer-reviewed archival journal) on three of the PIs research grants. These grants are “Measurements and Modeling of Scattering from Rock Outcrops,” funded by ONR, “Calibrated Synthetic Aperture Sonar,” funded by ONR, and “Measurement of bottom scattering in rocky areas” funded by NPS Research Initiation Program.
Work has already begun on all of these proposals, and this sonar could potentially be used immediately to perform the experiments required to complete the proposal deliverables.
Commercial off the shelf sonars do not meet the requirements specified below (primarily the angular resolution, and ability to beamform), so this system will have to be customized from parts used in COTS systems. Many of the individual components, such as analog to digital converters, data acquisition cards, and transducer elements are used in current commercial systems. However, the system as a whole, including the electronics and the array, must be customized in order to transmit the broadband pulses required, and receive the scattered signals coherently over all receivers over the whole band. The receiver array elements are commercially available PVDF transducers (traditional ceramic elements do not have the capability for the required bandwidth of the system, but PVDF does), but the design and fabrication of the whole array requires customization and fabrication. Additionally, since the PVDF transducers have a very low capacitance, each transducer element needs to be connected to a preamplifier quite close to the element to achieve a usable signal to noise ratio, which also requires customization. The two components of this system, the electronics and the array, require system integration, which will be performed by the supplier. Cost of integration shall be incorporated into the cost of the array.
2.0 Minimal Technical Requirements/Salient Characteristics:
This sonar system must be capable of measuring calibrated acoustic target strength over the continuous frequency band of 20 kHz to 300 kHz. This sonar system must be capable of resolving vertical angles to within 80 degrees full width half power max at 20 kHz, and 7 degrees full width half power max at 300 kHz. This sonar system must be capable of resolving horizontal angles to within 10 degrees full width half power max at 20 kHz, and 1 degree full width half power max at 300 kHz.
This sonar system will consist of two components, the transmit/receive electronics housing, and the transmit/receive array, hereafter called the electronics and array respectively. Below, the specifications of the acquisition system and array are given that will allow the system to meet the general requirements stated in the previous paragraph.
Specifications for array:
This broadband sonar system will transmit acoustic signals using two omnidirectional spherical transducers, approximately
2.5 +/- 0.25 inches and 1.0 +/- 0.25 inches in diameter. The resonance frequencies of the projectors will be 35 kHz +/- 10 kHz, and 85 kHz, +/- 10 kHz. System must be able to produce a minimum source level of 160 dB re 1 Pa at 1 m range over the 20 kHz to 300 kHz band. TVR for transmitting transducers must be provided over the 20kHz to 300 kHz band.
System will sense scattered acoustic signals on a planar array of 24 receive elements with dimensions 3 inches by 0.5 inches, over the entire band between 20 kHz and 300 kHz. These elements will placed in a rectangular array of six columns and four rows, as specified below in Fig. 1 by the blue rectangles. Total array aperture is 18 inches in the horizontal direction and 2 inches in the vertical direction. Space between adjacent array elements must be minimized as much as possible, so long as the elements are electrically insulated from each other. Maximum tolerated space between array elements is 1/16 inches. The spacing between the elements can be subtracted from the element size such that the array maintains a total aperture of 18x2 inches. The array must be covered by a thin matching layer that is optically transparent.
The receiving elements must be made from piezoelectric PVDF, which will be able to achieve the bandwidth required by the system. The open circuit voltage sensitivity of these receiving transducers must be flat over the 20 kHz – 300 kHz band to with +/- 6 dB. Delivered product must be accompanied by the calibrated free field voltage response of each hydrophone element at the maximum response axis over the whole band. Each receive element will be connected by a short cable to a preamplifier to improve signal to noise ratio of the receiving elements. The preamplifier must provide at least 20 dB of signal gain and be flat to within +/- 3 dB over the 20 kHz to 300 kHz band. Calibrated response of elements will include the effect of the preamplifier. The vertical and horizontal beampattern of each element at 20 kHz, 66 kHz, 133 kHz, and 200 kHz must be provided.
The array will be mounted on a ¼ inch thick plate made of anodized aluminum. The total plate dimensions will be 20 inches by 4 inches. Plate will have 1/4-inch clearance holes drilled in eight locations. These holes will be used to mount the array plate to NPS over-the-side mount. The geometry of the array, mounting plate and holes are specified in Fig 1. The array must be flat to within 0.1 mm or 0.0039 inches. The locations of the clearance holes are specified by green circles in Fig. 1
Fig. 1
Specifications for electronics:
The end user must be able to design, load, and transmit their own signals. System must be able to transmit user defined signals that have at least full width half power bandwidth of 100 kHz. The band from 20 kHz to 300 kHz will be covered by at most three separate transmissions, one transmitted by the large transducer, and the other two transmitted by the small transducer. Simultaneous transmission over the entire band is preferred, although not required. Signals transmitted by the system will be less than or equal to 2 milliseconds in duration, although the signal length must be flexible within that limitation. The system will be capable of recording echoes at least 100 m distance from the system given a nominal sound speed of 1500 m/s. It is acknowledged that SNR will not be uniform at 100m range over the entire system bandwidth. Pulse repetition rate must be at least 4 Hz for echoes up to 100 m maximum range, but the rate must be able to be increased for shorter ranges. Transmitting duty cycle shall be no more than 12%. Amplifier level must be able to be controlled by end user to ensure compliance with environmental regulations within the NOAA Monterey Bay Sanctuary.
The analog signal must be sampled and converted to a digital signal, 16 bits at minimum. The sample rate must be at least
1.2 MHz (1200 kHz). The gain of the analog to digital converter must be variable, able to be set by the end user, or automatically set, to maximize the dynamic range of the system. The end-user must be able to access the raw recorded data.
Data must be provided as in phase and quadrature components. Sampled data must be synchronous across all receiving elements. Ping to ping coherence must be maximized.
Receiving electronics will be housed in a waterproof pressure hull that can be deployed in up to 100m of water.
System will be controlled by a laptop that connects to the receiving electronics via ethernet. Software for controlling the sonar system must be provided. Optionally, the software will display the echo level of one receive channel in real time.
System must be deployable on the 26-foot rigid hull inflatable boat owned by the NPS Oceanography department. System must use less than 1000 W of peak power, preferably about 200 W average.
Manufacturer for system must have a demonstrated history of providing acoustic backscattering systems to the scientific community for the purposes of measuring calibrated target strength of the water column and/or the seafloor. These previously provided systems must have been used by end-users of these systems to publish peer-reviewed articles on broadband scattering measurements, in at least one recognized acoustics journal, including The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, Waves in Random and Complex Media,, and The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America Express Letters.
