SPECIFICATION GUIDE

1.0 BACKGROUND AND SCOPE

1.1 Background

At the direction of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO), the MK 38 MOD 2 Machine Gun System (MGS) was developed in 2003 to improve ship self-defense. The rapid fielding of the MGS has been deemed a necessity by the PEO IWS for a ship’s close in defense against small craft, swimmers, floating mines, and various targets ashore including enemy personnel, lightly armored vehicles and terrorist threats. The nature of the requirements (crane services, rigging, etc.) and length of installation requires the MK 38 MOD 2 MGS installations occur during scheduled maintenance windows. Once the window passes for a particular ship, it is generally two years before they enter another planned maintenance window.

The Ship and Air Integrated Warfare Division (AIR 4.11.3) of the Naval Air Warfare Center, Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), St. Inigoes, has been tasked by the Program Executive Office Integrated Weapons Systems (PEO IWS) to outfit various U.S. Navy ships with Remote Operator Consoles (ROCs). The ROCs will serve as an operation station for the user and will hold the monitor and gun controllers for the MK 38 MOD 2 MGS.
