STATEMENT OF WORK
NAVAIR Active Flow Control on a Representative High Performance Military Wing
Project Background
A diamond wing model will be constructed and tested with sweeping jet actuators on both the leading edge flap (LEF) and trailing edge flap (TEF). It is planned to manufacture three distinct LEF angles (0 degrees, 10 degrees, and 22 degrees) and three distinct TEF angles (0 degrees, 20 degrees, and 35 degrees). The proposed diamond wing configuration has been tested previously and modeled using CFD for three lofted configurations: undeflected cruise condition (0/0), simply deflected LEF (22 degrees), and TEF (20 degrees), and a simply deflected LEF (22 degrees) with a slotted high lift TEF system (20 degrees and 35 degrees). As such, this provides a legacy baseline to quantify the benefits of active flow control. It is proposed that an array of sweeping jets be placed upstream of the LEF and TEF hingeline, see Fig. 8. The span length of the arrays will be as much as practicable on the LEF and the span length of the TEF.
The sweeping jet arrays will be designed for, and manufactured and installed on the diamond wing to mimic three configurations: a main wing, a vertical tail with deflected rudder, and an undeflected, paddle-like horizontal tail. The augmented main wing performance will be evaluated using sweeping jet arrays on both the deflected LEF and deflected TEF. Using the sweeping jets on the deflected TEF only and with an undeflected LEF, the performance of a simulated rudder/vertical tail may be estimated. Similarly, using sweeping jet array on the undeflected LEF with an undeflected TEF allows the performance of a simulated paddle-type horizontal tail to be estimated.
The tasks indicated below are to be part of the overall program of testing the wing configurations by NAVAIR both in terms of system integration and project schedule deadlines.
Tasks
1. Sweeping Jet design: location and performance specification.
Preliminary study of wing-flap configuration to determine sizing of actuators, location on the airfoil for maximum benefit – coordinate this with NAVAIR and model fabricator.
2. Design of actuators and perform (supply pressure vs. frequency) testing of a single actuator.
3. Design of actuator array and develop method of integration into the wing model – including location, air supply, spacing, etc.
4. Fabricate array and supply this to model fabricator for integration and preliminary bench testing of actuator-wing assembly.
5. Provide technical support for windtunnel testing of integrated model.
6. Provide technical support in wind tunnel test data reduction and analysis.
7. Assist in preparation of final report.
Deliverables:
1. Performance characteristics (Frequency vs. supply pressure) for single actuator
2. Fabricated array
3. Sections of report concerning sweeping jet actuator performance.
