The OMG is an international, open membership, not- for-profit technology standards consortium, founded in . OMG standards are driven by vendors, end-users, academic institutions and government agencies. OMG is a standards development organization that develops standards for engineering organization, management, architectures, frameworks, techniques, and methods. This membership uniquely covers a subject matter not duplicated by other organizations. It uniquely produces and maintains computer industry specifications for interoperable enterprise applications. OMG also partners or manages other related consortium such as the Cloud Standards Customer Council, Consortium for IT Software Quality, and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) (Industrial Internet Consortium). OMG develops unique specifications and standards for a wide-variety of domains in industries related to DoD missions such as healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications, and others. Protects and Promotes Intellectual Property Rights. For example, OMG promotes the use of the DoD’s Architecture Framework [DoD] with compliant specifications such as Unified Profile for USA Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) and UK Ministry of Defence Architecture Framework (MODAF) to Unified Architecture Framework (UPDM/UAF).

While the specification and standards are trademarked or copyrighted, the finalized versions of all are made available without charge and are available in competitive commercial products. Members such as the Department of Defense participate in the development of each specification and are in a special position to influence the development of new and modification of existing standards through participation in OMG’s various groups. OMG also works openly and regularly works through subordinate technical working groups (known as either Domain Task Forces (DTF)or Domain Special Interest Groups) or cross- domain groups known as Platform Task Forces (PTFs) including:

Business Modeling and Integration DTFs; Consultation, Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (C4I) -- primarily military and homeland security;

Finance DTF; Government Information Sharing & Services DTF; Healthcare DTF;

Manufacturing Technology & Industrial Systems DTF; Mathematical Formalisms DSIG;

Regulatory Compliance DSIG; Robotics DTF; Space DTF; and Systems Engineering DSIG [including Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)]. Middleware and Related Services (MARS) PTF and the System Assurance PTF (Risk Threat Assessment].

Membership to OMG publishes specifications widely used in the DoD and Defense Community. OMG is well-known for its technical specifications including the Unified Modeling Language (UML), Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), Data Distribution Services (DDS), Business Model and Notation (BPMN), UML Profile for National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), Meta Object Facility (MOF) and XML Model Interchange (XMI); as well as the Systems Modeling Language (SysML); The Unified Profile for DoDAF/MODAF (UPDM™) is a visual modeling standard that supports the development of architectures that comply with the DoDAF and the MODAF.
