Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The purpose of this purchase is to procure dense arrays of recording electrodes to record single units from a large numbers of cortical neurons located in select brain regions of nonhuman primates.

2. Background Information and Objective: The Laboratory of Neuropsychology investigates higher brain functions such as object identification and memory, and related functions such as reward seeking. Recent advances in technology permit recording from large numbers of neurons simultaneously, which opens the doors to new analytic approaches. The power of these approaches depends upon the number of electrodes that can be recorded simultaneously.

Recording large numbers of electrodes over long periods from the brains of humans and other primates is a very difficult technical problem. After many years of development, there is now an array that can record from 96 electrodes simultaneously. This array “Blackrock/Utah array” has been extensively tested and validated in the Laboratory of Neuropsychology and Laboratory of Systems Neuroscience here at NIH. This technology has taken one more step that allows clustering multiple arrays into a custom dense array system. The use of dense arrays will lead to a deeper understanding of neural systems (circuits) of the brain, providing new insights relevant to physiological and psychological health and disease.
