SUMMARY of LABORATORY SERVICES
Legionella Culture Method Legionella culture method is a modified version of the ISO Standard 11731:1998, Water Quality-Detection and enumeration of Legionella, and the ISO Standard 11731:2004, Water Quality-Detection and enumeration of Legionella – Part 2: Direct membrane filtration method for waters with low bacteria counts.
Legionella Isolation Legionella isolation is performed using both direct plating and filter membrane concentration. Potable water samples are processed onto both non-selective media (BCYE) and selective media (DGVP). Non-potable water samples are processed using two selective media (DGVP, CCVC). Acid pretreatment of the water sample is used when necessary. Limit of detection is approximately 1–10 colony forming units per milliliter.
Legionella Identification Legionella identification to species and serogroup level is performed using latex agglutination for presumptive identification followed by direct fluorescent antibody stain (DFA) for confirmation. Identification includes, but is not limited to: L. pneumophilia, L. micdadei, L. bozemanii, L. dumoffii, and L. saintthelensi.
Storage Onsite storage of Legionella isolates upon request. Frozen at -70ºC.
Sample Transfer Collect and ship samples within 24 hours with the provided SPL Chain of Custody form. Results delivered in PDF format.
Intrepretation Consultation of positive results with Dr. Janet E. Stout.
SPL microbiologists with backgrounds in clincial, environmental and applied microbiology have more than 30 years of specialized knowledge in Legionella.

SUMMARY OF LEGIONELLA SERVICES
Teleconference with Management and/or Medical Staff 12 monthly conference calls with facility’s management and/or medical staff (i.e. Water Safety Committee) to answer questions, give explanations and provide clarifications regarding Legionella, water safety, risk management, water conservation, and/or water treatment topics related to the facility’s potable and utility water systems.
On-site Environmental Assessment On-site environmental assessment of one potable cold water and one potable hot water system. Assessment activities include Legionella risk assessment, review of one line drawings and schematics, review of mixing valves and fixtures, data collection and analysis at up to 20 distal outlets (temperature, pH, disinfectant, flow rate).
Development of a Sampling Plan Development of a sampling plan for one building which provides recommended water sampling locations, frequency, and parameters, including Legionella and physiochemical parameters. Sampling plan used to collect data for Legionella Risk Assessment, Water Safety Plan validation, and/or water system effciency and conservation studies.
Final Report of Findings Report provided in conjuction with the on-site environmental assessment including documentation of collected data for one potable cold water and one potable hot water system. Report also summarizes and interprets any Legionella culture results for the water systems. Recommendations are provided to improve water system operation and maintenace while reducing Legionella risk and enhancing water safety and system effciency.
Disinfection Recommendations (short- and long-term) and Cost Projections Feasibility report provided with evidenced-based recommendations for a supplementary disinfection system for a single water system. Feasibility report includes evaulation of up to three alternative disinfection technologies, including review of disinfectant effciency and efficacy, equipment design features, disinfectant levels, disinfection by-products, operating and maintenance, permitting, and order of magnitude capital and operating costs.
Sharing our Legionella expertise in collaboration with your team lays the foundation for effective Legionella risk management and response.

COMPANY OVERVIEW
Legionella Expertise Special Pathogens Laboratory (SPL) gives you what no one else can—clinical and environmental expertise in Legionella detection, control, and remediation.
We provide evidence-based and cost-effective solutions based on authoritative research by SPL founders Janet E. Stout, PhD, and Victor L. Yu, MD, who are internationally recognized as research pioneers and experts in Legionella. Let our expertise work for you. When you partner with The Legionella Experts® you benefit from more than 30 years of success in Legionnaires’ disease prevention.
Multidisciplinary Team It takes a team to prevent Legionnaires’ disease. SPL provides expertise in microbiology, engineering, public health, medicine, risk management and communication. From water safety plans to outbreak response, our multidisciplinary team collaborates with you to develop a comprehensive solution for your specific situation. We help you manage risk and legal liability so you can respond with confidence and not react to Legionella in your water.
Reliable Results SPL participates in national and international Legionella profeciency programs— the CDC-ELITE and the Public Health of England. We are one of the few labs in the United States specifically accredited for Legionella testing. Our testing protocol is the only method validated by prospective studies that correlate risk of disease with the extent of environmental contamination. SPL microbiologists have more than 30 years experience in clinical, environmental microbiology and applied research in Legionella and waterborne pathogens. With the specialized knowledge needed to detect Legionella, we deliver test results you can trust.
Model for Prevention SPL’s proactive approach has become a national and international model for Legionnaires’ disease prevention. Drs. Stout and Yu assisted in developing the first U.S. guideline to control Legionella. As a result, studies showed that routine culturing reduced hospital-acquired Legionnaires’ disease from 33% to 9%. With SPL’s model for prevention you can meet the challenges of preventing disease associated with Legionella and waterborne pathogens in building water systems.
Special Pathogens Laboratory provides a comprehensive evidence-based solution to detect and control Legionella and other waterborne pathogens in building and utility water systems.

COMPANY OVERVIEW
Differentiators
• Seminal research in Legionella including the first to link Legionella in hospital drinking water to disease (New England Journal of Medicine, 1982).
• Developed first U.S. Legionella guideline in 1993 with focus on environmental testing; today considered a national and international model for prevention.
• SPL’s testing protocol adopted by VA for Legionella directive (2008).
• SPL introduced and evaluated all major Legionella disinfection technologies used today.
• Only validated testing method in published studies that correlates disease risk with Legionella culture results and extent of environmental contamination (e.g., Stout et al. Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology; 2007).
• Created DGVP, a selective media for Legionella now the industry standard.
• More than 300 research articles published in medical and scientific journals on Legionella and Legionnaires’ disease since 1982.
• Authors of Legionella chapters in Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine, Manual of Clinical Microiology, APIC Text, and Up-to-Date.
• Microbiologists with more than 30 years specialized knowledge in Legionella detection.
• Multidisciplinary team composed of professionals in microbiology, engineering, infectious diseases, risk managment by certified HACCP auditors, public health, and communication.
