HVAC Service and Installation Technicians are tradespeople with licenses, certifications, related experience, and capabilities required by agencies to perform commercial HVAC system and equipment repair, installation, and maintenance. Unlike HVAC Facility Maintenance Technicians, these mechanics do not report to support a single facility, but are dispatched to various locations as needed, in a fully stocked vehicle, with tools, parts, refrigerant, materials, etc. to perform their duties. They are experienced with a wider variety of commercial HVAC/CHILLER equipment, controls, and systems (piping, hydronics, ventilation, ducting, refrigeration, electrical, controls, water treatment, etc.) than HVAC Facility Maintenance Technicians. They repair, maintain, replace, adjust, and operate commercial HVAC/CHILLER systems and equipment, perform periodic preventive maintenance, service, systems and equipment replacement and installation. The technicians may support operation and maintenance teams or preventive maintenance contract sites on an intermittent or emergency basis, but they do not report to the same location each day as a part of the building operations and maintenance team.

Traditional skill levels are apprentice/ entry level, journeyperson, and master.

23410 HVAC Apprentice HVAC Technician Minimum Experience: Entry Level Preferred Experience 2 Years Education: Accredited Apprentice Program Entry Level/ Apprentice HVAC Facility Maintenance Technicians are training, through an accredited apprentice program and mentored by journey people, to become certified HVAC Technicians. An HVAC Controls Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of control systems within heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration units. Their duties include setting up and configuring these systems, which involves wiring, programming controllers, sensors, and other related hardware. They conduct routine maintenance checks to ensure these systems operate efficiently, calibrate instruments, replace faulty parts, and update software as necessary.

Troubleshooting forms a significant part of their role, requiring them to diagnose issues within the HVAC systems, particularly focusing on control components. This involves interpreting complex blueprints and schematics to identify and resolve problems. They also adjust control settings to optimize system performance based on building requirements.

Ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations is crucial, as is maintaining detailed documentation of all work performed. Additionally, they often interact with clients, offering support and training on new control technologies to ensure optimal system use.

23410 HVAC Filter Technician Minimum Experience 2 years Preferred Experience: 5 years Education : CFC certification, specialized manufacturer training and/or certifications, NATE.

An HVAC Filter Technician primarily focuses on the maintenance and replacement of filters in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Their main duties involve inspecting HVAC filters to assess their condition, replacing them as needed, and ensuring proper installation to maintain optimal air quality and system efficiency. They also conduct system tests following filter replacements to check airflow and overall system performance, making necessary adjustments to ensure the HVAC units operate optimally.

Beyond hands-on maintenance, HVAC Filter Technicians are responsible for inventory management of replacement filters and related supplies. They keep detailed records of maintenance activities, types of filters used, and replacement schedules to support effective long-term maintenance planning. Adhering to safety standards and environmental regulations, particularly in the disposal of used filters and handling hazardous materials, is crucial. They also interact with clients, educating them on the importance of regular filter maintenance and advising on maintaining optimal system efficiency between professional checks.
