Service Descriptions

Translation is the process of rendering the written word from a source language into one or more target language(s). The use of professional human translators involves a three-step process of translation, editing and proofreading (TEP). This ensures that a qualified professional linguist who is a native speaker of the target language and specialist in the subject-matter of the material performs the translation. The purpose of editing and proofreading is to ensure proper usage, style, grammar, flow and punctuation in addition to comparing deliverables against the source material to insure fidelity. Editing and proofreading is performed by a separate linguist to offer an additional perspective which can be invaluable due to regional variations, slang and dialect. While other methods such as machine translation and crowd sourced translation are utilized, the preferred solution is currently professional human translators.

Standard translation services performed by a professional human translator will render deliverables that look and read as if they were originally created by a native of the source language. In some instances, the measures required to ensure this quality are above and beyond the scope of regular translation. Company, brand, product and service names are notoriously difficult to translate since they are often based upon puns, slang, pop culture, play on words or technical jargon. A word-for-word translation is undesirable, or even impossible if a certain concept does not exist in the target culture. Transcreation involves re-creating source material as needed so that it transports the main message across cultural boundaries in a way that makes sense to the target audience when literal adaptation is not effective or possible.

Interpretation is the process of rendering the spoken word from a source language into a target language. It is performed by highly-trained professionals who are not only fluent in the source and target languages, but are also familiar with best practices such as establishing rapport, emotional intelligence and cultural sensitivity, maintaining neutrality and abiding by ethics and privacy laws/standards. There are two primary methods of interpretation.

Consecutive interpreting is practiced in a one-to-one or small group setting. The interpreter waits for the speaker to finish and then conveys the message to participants in another language. In simultaneous interpreting, interpreters translate in real-time while words are being spoken. This is the style of interpreting utilized by the United Nations and involves equipment such as a sound-proof booth, headphones and audio equipment.

Transcription is a process that dictates the spoken word from a person, recording or video into a written transcript which can be translated into other language(s). The service is popular among medical, legal and multimedia applications as well as supporting meetings which include culturally and linguistically diverse participants.

Subtitling is the process of transcribing the audio component of a video, translating the material, and re-integrating it into the video as a written caption. It requires specialized skill in multimedia technology and formats, design/readability techniques and proper timing in sequence with the video.

Desktop publishing (DTP) is multilingual graphic design, editing, layout and typesetting. It involves proper use of challenging font sets including character languages, and accounts for changes in layout from an original to translated document. For example, some languages increase up to 25% in word count from the original source, while others contract by up to 25% Adjustments are necessary to maintain pagination, image placement, layout etc. Good multilingual DTP will also take cultural considerations such as color connotation, image appropriateness and other stylistic elements into account.

Localization Testing (QA) is an important process when translating web sites, hardware, software and applications.

It tests for proper functioning of the finished product including user interface, font sets, input and output, storage and retrieval, time/currency/measurements, cultural sensitivity and technical standards.

Braille is the tactile written word produced for the blind and visually impaired. It is a complex production process with unique standards for the size, punctuation, style, order, and contractions of raised Braille script. Most Braille alphabets follow an international consensus; however, variations among different languages require specialized understanding.

Proofreading is part of the translation process that focuses on ensuring proper grammar, punctuation, spelling and formatting conventions including time, measurement and currency.

Voice Over is a process of rendering a written script into translated audio material. It is performed (often in a studio) by professional voice talent fluent in the source and target languages. Male and female voice talent is available to accommodate for gender-based preferences in conveying material. An example would be a medical hotline with recorded messages featuring health care tips for both men and women’s health issues. Samples of voice talent are frequently provided before work begins so that a choice can be made among varying tone, pronunciation and reading pace.
