The results are ideally compared to the athlete’s baseline scores or, if not available, to normative data provided by the manufacturer. CNT is used to assist clinicians and athletic trainers in determining whether an athlete suffers from neurocognitive impairment and suspected concussion, thus requiring additional diagnostic evaluation or whether the athlete is able to safely return to play. These tests are not intended as standalone diagnostic or prognostic methods.

With 2-way technology, patients may send data to their healthcare provider and receive feedback on their behavior and diabetes control. With some systems, data may be viewed in graphical form or websites may offer forums and peer groups to offer additional support for diabetes self-management.
03/14/2014DirectoryTranscranial Magnetic Stimulation for Treatment-Resistant DepressionTranscranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive technique that is being investigated as a treatment for major depression. Brief repetitive pulses of magnetic energy are applied to the scalp via a large electromagnetic coil to generate low levels of electrical current in the underlying brain tissue. The goal of TMS is to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation to lessen the duration or severity of depressive episodes. In patients who have not responded to previous trials of antidepressant (AD) medication, TMS may be used to augment pharmacotherapy or in lieu of a new medication.

05/09/2014DirectoryAncillary Procedures and Services for the Treatment of Gender DysphoriaSome persons with gender dysphoria (GD) may seek hormone therapy and /or sex reassignment surgery (SRS) to resolve their incongruity between biological sex and gender identity. Additional ancillary surgeries or services, such as facial modifications, vocal cord surgery, or voice training, may be desired by transgender persons to further feminize or masculinize the body and/or perception of gender. In some cases, ancillary procedures are performed without SRS.
05/15/2014DirectorySex Reassignment Surgery for the Treatment of Gender DysphoriaSex reassignment surgery (SRS), which involves genital reconstruction surgery and chest surgery, is part of the treatment approach for persons with gender dysphoria (GD). Individuals with GD have persistent feelings of gender discomfort and inappropriateness of their anatomical sex, strong and ongoing cross-gender identification, and a desire to live and be accepted as a member of the opposite sex. SRS includes the surgical procedures by which the physical appearance and function of a person’s existing sexual characteristics are changed to those of the other sex in an effort to resolve or minimize GD and improve quality of life.
05/19/2014DirectoryHormone Therapy for the Treatment of Gender DysphoriaContinuous feminizing or masculinizing hormone therapy is administered to some adolescents and adults who have a diagnosis of gender identity disorder (GID) or gender dysphoria (GD). The purpose of this therapy is to facilitate a transgender individual’s desire to transition to a sexual identity other than his or her biological (natal) sex. Some individuals undergo hormone therapy as a prelude to sex reassignment surgery; other individuals seeking gender transition undergo hormone therapy without ever undergoing any type of surgery.

06/26/2014DirectoryTotal Hip Replacement with Hard on Hard ProsthesesTotal hip arthroplasty (THA) is performed to relieve pain and restore mobility and function of a diseased or damaged hip and, thereby, to improve quality of life. Hard-on-hard bearings were developed to address the issues associated with conventional metal-on-polyethylene prosthesis failure associated with excessive wear particles and limited femoral head size options.
07/10/2014DirectoryCombined Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) for Evaluating Gastric and Colorectal CancersCombined positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) is an imaging technique that merges physiologic data from positron emission tomography (PET) and morphologic data from computed tomography (CT). The goal of PET-CT as an imaging tool for gastric and colorectal cancers is to provide optimal imaging capability by minimizing misalignment between PET and CT images. PET-CT has been proposed as a method for detecting and staging new occurrences of cancer, for restaging recurrent cancer, for treatment planning, and for monitoring response to treatment.

07/17/2014DirectoryCranial Orthotic Devices for the Treatment of Positional Cranial DeformityCranial orthotic devices are used to redirect growth of the skull bones and reduce cranial asymmetry in infants who have positional cranial deformity.
07/24/2014DirectoryRevisional Surgery for Treatment of Complications After Bariatric SurgeryThe term revisional bariatric surgery (RBS) encompasses a wide assortment of complex abdominal operations performed to treat patients who have experienced complications, insufficient amelioration of comorbid conditions, failure of weight loss, and/or weight regain after bariatric surgery for severe obesity.
08/07/2014DirectoryRoux-en-Y Gastric Bypass for Diabetes in Obese or Severely Obese PatientsRoux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a complex surgical procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and reroutes portions of the small intestine. The RYGB procedure helps patients with severe obesity who have been unable to achieve significant weight loss through medical therapy and lifestyle changes to lose a significant amount of weight and maintain that weight loss in the long term. RYGB is also associated with significant improvements or complete resolution of comorbidities associated with overweight and obesity, including type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
08/28/2014DirectoryLigament Augmentation and Reconstruction System (LARS) for Ligament Repairs of the KneeLigament Augmentation and Reconstruction System (LARS) (LARS Company) ligaments are synthetic alternatives to autograft and allograft-based soft-tissue repair. In the knee, they are used for intra- and extra-articular reconstruction of ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs), posterior cruciate ligaments (PCLs), and collateral ligaments. LARS devices augment the original ruptured ligament, providing a scaffold for fibroblastic in-growth and healing. Alternatively, they can augment an autologous ligament reconstruction.

Upright MRI may be useful in detecting anatomic spinal anomalies that would otherwise not be detected by conventional (recumbent) MRI. Upright MRI is commonly referred to as positional MRI or kinetic MRI.
09/11/2014DirectoryReverse Shoulder Total Joint ProsthesisThe reverse shoulder prosthesis is a semi-constrained glenohumeral joint prosthesis with a reverse ball and socket configuration.
