The RTI Difference
Commitment to Our Clients As a client of RTI International, you will have a partner that provides scientific rigor and solid project management to deliver your solution on time and on budget.
We approach each project as a partnership and draw on our expansive network to assemble multidisciplinary teams with the targeted expertise to comprehensively analyze and uniquely address client challenges.
Contractor Performance Assessment Reports (CPARs) allow federal clients to provide only limited feedback on our project performance. That is why RTI implemented our interactive Client Listening Program.
RTI project leaders solicit client feedback at key points during a project and as needed, such as after the kickoff meeting or after the provision of a key deliverable.
These brief questionnaires were designed to be completed within 2 to 3 minutes. Although the process is fast, the results are long-lasting. This feedback helps target our focus, recognize what we are doing well, and identify how we can improve our value to our clients. All completed questionnaires are reviewed by RTI management.
In addition, RTI leaders regularly conduct internal project reviews, analyze CPARs, and meet one-on-one with clients.
Quality
RTI’s commitment to quality is reflected in our objectivity and professional integrity, our innovation, and our scientific and technical leadership. It is the foundation of our past success and the cornerstone on which we are building our future.
–Wayne Holden, President/CEO, RTI International
All RTI employees are responsible for ensuring that their work adheres to RTI’s quality, integrity, and ethical standards.
RTI’s overarching quality management structure includes a corporate Quality Leadership Team that drives the strategic goals of the Quality Program.
• Members of the Quality Leadership Team are appointed by the Chief Operating Officer and approved by the President and Chief Executive Officer. The Team monitors and coordinates quality efforts across the organization.
• Each RTI Business Unit features designated quality leaders who implement these quality systems within their respective lines of business, share best practices, and communicate progress to the Corporate Leadership Team.
2020 Client Experience Excellence Award
• RTI was awarded a Premier Award for Client Satisfaction for “demonstrating a commitment to giving clients a voice as a means to deliver excellent service, and confirmation from clients that service was, indeed, excellent.”

Hydrologic Risk Assessment
RTI uses advanced probabilistic hydrologic risk assessment methods to optimize risk quantification for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s (TVA’s) Dam Safety Program. We conduct storm and flood hazard probability analyses to simulate hydrologic and reservoir operation responses and develop hydrologic hazard curves. We also use hydraulic modeling, flood mapping, and consequence tools to perform dam failure consequence analyses to measure economic damage and loss of life. We apply similar advanced probabilistic approaches to assess long-term risk and vulnerability in water supply systems given highly uncertain future conditions. These services support risk-informed decision-making to enable TVA to focus their capital improvement efforts on the critical issues that are most likely to have significant consequences.
RTI Center for Water Resources
With advanced, information-based technology and solutions, RTI helps translate data into actionable information to strengthen water security and resilience against a backdrop of increasing demand, water scarcity, extreme weather events, and hydrologic uncertainty.
Communities are vulnerable not only to the direct impacts of flood and drought, but also to the indirect impact of infrastructure failure.
As a result, water managers must regularly assess the safety and reliability of their systems with tools to quantify risk and prioritize capital improvements.

RTI Advanced Smart Sensor Technology (ASSET)
RTI’s ASSET initiative integrates short-wave infrared (SWIR) sensors with unmanned aircraft to give researchers a low-cost alternative to collecting images and data in low-resource environments. SWIR sensors detect water, making them useful in agriculture, forestry, and a variety of other commercial and scientific applications, including the following:
• Controlling the spread of mosquito-borne viruses by identifying containers of standing water that could serve as breeding sites
• Developing more accurate predictions of food crop yields through advanced phenotyping of plants during their growing cycles
• Aiding search and rescue operations by providing situational awareness under limited visibility conditions https://www.rti.org/centers/rti-center-water-resources https://www.rti.org/practice-area/energy-research https://www.rti.org/service-capability/process-engineering-and-technology-development https://www.rti.org/service-capability/process-engineering-and-technology-development https://www.rti.org/service-capability/engineering-technology-rd

Grid Environmental Trade-Offs in the Hydropower Sector
As a part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s HydroWIRES Initiative, RTI partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and four other national laboratories to assess links between environmental multi-objective flow requirements, reservoir operating decisions, and power system needs.
This project recognizes the complexities in defining operating policies for hydropower reservoirs that allow operators to take full advantage of available flexibility to meet needs on the electrical grid while balancing nonpower needs, such as healthy rivers, recreation, water supply, and flood control.
The project attempts to lay out a framework for evaluating these trade-offs through a series of case studies in which we identify optimal strategies that effectively support both environmental and power generation needs.
The team aims to demonstrate the increased benefits of hydropower in the future with greater renewables penetration.
