[1] Most laboratories performing SM6040D for MIB & Geosmin do not have two instruments.
Since we only have one instrument, are we still able to bid? If the USGS has a definite requirement for duplicates on two separate instrument, it may need to contract with two separate laboratories to meet this need.
Per the Statement of Work: Each aliquot shall be run on a different instrument to allow comparison of relative percent differences between samples and any irregularities between instruments.

[2] In general, laboratories calibrate instruments and the calibration holds for several days to several weeks. The calibration is verified on a daily basis, and if out-of-spec, the instrument is then re-calibrated. Do you require a daily calibration every day that your specific samples are analyzed, as this will add to the costs of operations?
No daily calibration is required as long as verification is done daily and documented to be within specifications and calibration as necessary
[3] Of the approximate 100 samples per year, what is the anticipated sample delivery group size and frequency? (i.e. one sample at a time, twice a week, each week of the year or¿ 2 samples at the same time weekly or¿ 8 at a time montly, etc.)?
We routinely send in from 3-10 samples per month, usually in groups of 3 or 4, once or twice a month. Occasionally we will send in a QA/QC sample (blank or replicate for example). If there is a particular algae bloom or taste-and-odor event going on, typically in the summer months, then we have sent in 20-25 samples in a month.
That is not a very regular occurrence though. The quantity and frequency of event sampling varies on the nature of the event and sampling requests made to us by our cooperators. In these situations, we do make an extra effort to let our labs know what is going on and that we will be sending in more samples than usual for a period of time.
[4] Will you be paying for the shipping of samples to the laboratory?
USGS will pay for shipping to the contractor¿s facility. Note that per the Statement of Work:
Laboratory shall provide and send to USGS, at laboratories expense, the required sample bottles in advance in quantities requested by USGS.
[5] Since we only have one instrument and you are looking for variability in the measurement, would it be of interest for us to propose analysis in two different analytical batches
(i.e. within 24hrs and then next day, within
48hrs)?
Per the Statement of Work: Each aliquot shall be run on a different instrument to allow comparison of relative percent differences between samples and any irregularities between instruments.
