About this file

This document is a sole source justification for snow depth sensors for the Department of Agriculture Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation. The National Resources Conservation Service Utah Snow Survey requires 230 compatible SDI-12 snow depth sensors with 17 foot cables and mounting kits manufactured by Campbell Scientific. Campbell Scientific has a GSA schedule and designs, manufactures and supports the necessary measurement hardware and controls that interface with these snow depth sensors. Extensive testing has shown Campbell Scientific's SnowVUE10 sensors perform to standards, are compatible with the existing network infrastructure, and are reasonably priced. Market research found no comparable products that meet specifications and are compatible with the current system, and using other equipment would significantly increase costs and labor for maintenance.

(30) SnowVUE10-17 SDI-12 snow depth sensors with 17 ft of cable and mounting kits.

Currently there are nearly 230 snow depth sensors deployed in the SNOTEL network managed by NRCS Utah. The SnowVUE10-17 manufactured by is compatible with the current SNOTEL weather station configuration and allows for future planned upgrades without additional significant expense in parts and labor. has a GSA schedule, and they design, manufacture and support both the measurement and control hardware that must interface with the SnowVUE10-17 as well as the SnowVUE snow depth sensor. Extensive testing has shown the SnowVUE10 to perform up to required standards, is compatible with the existing network and is reasonably priced.

Market research has been conducted to determine that there are no comparable products available for purchase that are compatible with the existing infrastructure and meet the standards and specifications stated in the NRCS General Manual.

Use of other brand equipment would result in significant reconfiguration of systems and would contribute to a significant increase in cost and labor spent performing routine maintenance.
