Part 3 –Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (“DMA”) Systems Minimum Salient Characteristics, Desktop Computer’s Minimum Salient Characteristics and Trade In of Existing TA Instrument’s RSA3 (Pleases note that the dynamic mechanical analyzer will be referred to as the “DMA” in this document):
a. DMA Design:
To characterize the viscoelastic materials, the FDA often measure various moduli (elastic, creep, relaxation, storage vs loss moduli) at various experimental conditions. It is important that the data produced by the “DMA” system shall not be distorted by the inertia of the moving grip of the instrument and the scientific instrument shall not require and inertia correction for accurate modulus measurements, due to inertial corrections are prone to error at high frequencies and low stiffness specimens. Therefore, the “DMA’s” design shall possess a separate motor and transducer (SMT) technology. In SMT technology, the deformation motor is beneath the specimen and provides the commanded strain or strain rate. The top of the specimen is coupled to the static, noncompliant force transducer. This design provides for accurate modulus measurement without the need for inertial correction.
b. DMA Motor:
To measure frequency dependent mechanical properties at various strains or strain rate, the “DMA’s” motor shall consist of the following:
I. A direct-drive that directly applies bot absolute strain and strain rate, and must be able to generate dynamic strain rate amplitudes from 0.05 to 1,500 microns with a very high resolution;
II. Capable of performing a step-strain (stress relaxation) experiment without using user-input modules/viscosity target;
III. Capable of providing less than 10 millisecond rise time from 99% of a 10 micron step displacement;
IV. Capable of generating a range of frequencies between 1E-5 to 628 rad/s;
V. Capable of performing creep experiments, without fluctuation in the applied stress, because samples used are soft biological tissue or tissue mimic.
c. DMA Force Transducer:
The force transducer must exhibit a large range (from 0.0001 to 25 N) with a very precise resolution (<0.0002 N). Force linearity shall be better than 0.1%. Transducer shall be maintained at room temperature and thermal drift effects shall be nominal (less than 0.002/°C ) at ambient conditions.
d. User Calibration:
The “DMA” shall possess a self-calibration device.
e. Temperature Control:
To control the environment of the experiment, the normal operating temperature range of the oven shall be between ambient and 300°C and be extended down to -150°C using a mechanical air-chiller device or a liquid nitrogen device. The heating/cooling rates of the oven shall be fast (20°C to 30°C/min). To heat the oven, the convection gas shall be preheated to the test temperature before entering the oven cavity. Please note that ovens which introduce convection gas into the oven cavity at room temperature and then heat the gas with heating elements do not provide temperature stability.
f. TMA Capability:
The “DMA” shall be capable of performing TMA measurements to measure the absolute coefficient of thermal expansion.
g. Axial Tests (Tensile testing or compression testing):
Measurements of device material strength often require applications of large strain. In order to apply a large strain to the sample (i.e. tensile-loading tests), the travel range of the “DMA” head shall be greater than 150 millimeters, and a linear optical encoder to ensure head position of 0.1 micrometer over the entire 150 mm of travel. The speed of the travel head shall be sufficiently controlled (from 0.0001 to 30 mm/sec). In order to generate traditional stress-strain cures, the sample deformation shall be controlled by: 1) constant linear strain rate, 2) Henky strain rate, 3) force, or 4) stress. In addition, the user shall be able to perform mixed deformation of the sample by a tensile/compression test simultaneously with an oscillatory test.
h. Immersion Tension System:
Test protocols require sample immersion in a liquid to imitate physiological conditions. The “DMA” shall allow for mechanical testing of solids while it is immersed in a liquid that can be controlled for temperature accurately in a test temperature range (usually between 0°C to 100°C). The system shall include tension, compression, and 3-point bending. The immersion chamber shall be able to sustain pH from 5.4 to 9.4.
i. Multi-Wave:
Samples that experience rapid structural changes require a multi-wave analysis using multiple frequencies in a single point. For example, as sinusoidal strain at a fundamental frequency and up to a few more sinusoidal strains, each at a harmonic frequency of the fundamental. Strain amplitude and frequency of both the fundamental and each additional harmonic should be user-selectable. Thus, the “DMA” shall be capable of applying a multiplexed waveform to the specimen.
j. Arbitrary Waveform:
The “DMA” shall allow user-defined period deformation (strain waveform) that enables the application of non-sinusoidal deformation to the sample material (e.g. square waves, triangular or saw-tooth waves, etc.)
k. Non-linear Testing:
A high sampling speed is necessary for high resolution of the measured signals (magnitude and phase). The “DMA” software must be able to fully integrate high speed data acquisitions for transient ( > ~ 8,000 points/sec ) and oscillatory (> ~ 15,000 points/sec) measurements. In oscillation tests higher orer harmonics which occur in the stress (force) signal are a result of non-linear sample response. Therefore, the “DMA” shall allow higher harmonic resolution for automatic analysis during oscillatory tests; and allow for post Fourier transformation analysis.
l. Real-time Waveforms:
The scientific equipment shall display the real-time waveforms and Lissajou patterns and save those images with each data point to be displayed anytime the file is loaded in the analysis software.
m. Desktop Computer (one): The desktop computer shall have the following minimum salient characteristics:
i. Windows Operating System
ii. 2.6 Ghz Dual Core Processor
iii. 4 GB RAM
iv. 250 GB SATA Hard Drive
v. DVD-R-COMBO
vi. Intel GMA 3000 Integrated Video Card
vii. CD Drive
viii. Gigabit Ethernet Communications
n. Warranty:
A one (1) year warranty on all parts and labor during the warranty period. The one year warranty period shall commence from the date of FDA inspection/acceptance of the “DMA” system.
o. Familiarization Training
The training session shall take place at the FDA’s facility and shall take place within 30 days after installation and FDA acceptance of the “DMA” system. The training sessions shall be arranged by the Technical Point of Contact (TPOC).
