Global Positioning System (GPS) Simulators

Requirements Document

For

704th Test Group (704 TG)/746th Test Squadron (746 TS)

1.0 PURPOSE

The 746 TS at Holloman Air Force Base (HAFB), New Mexico (NM) operates the Central Inertial and GPS Test Facility. This premier test facility is the United States Air Force (USAF) Center of Excellence (CoE) for guidance and navigation testing of developmental and operational weapons systems. The 746 TS provides expert test and evaluation of the following: Navigation Warfare Systems, Inertial Navigation Systems (INS), GPS and embedded GPS/INS navigation and guidance.

In order to perform GPS simualtions (as required by test customers) the GSS9790 Series Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Simulator is used to develop simulation requirements, utilizing a state-of-art reference system for testing and evaluating DoD navigation and guidance systems. During testing, the data from the GSS9790 Series GNSS Simulator is collected and post-processed together to create the optimal GPS navigation solution, which is used for data analysis to evaluate navigation weapon system performance. The approach of using GPS simulators is the “only” feasible technical approach in a laboratory environment where the use of GPS satellite signals are not able to be manipulated. This approach optimizes solution results and minimizes receiver data disparities, thus providing the ideal position solution.

The GSS9790 Series GNSS Simulator with controller, operating software, classified security and software modules create unique military GPS simulations. The GSS9790 Series GNSS Simulator is a commercial simulator with “non-commercial” military interface for military applications. It is designed and developed to strict military specifications and are only authorized for use by Department of Defense and foreign allied organizations. All developers, integrators and users of military GPS Y-code and M-code must be authorized by the GPS Wing, and adhere to strict DoD security requirements. The direction for procurement and use is documented in the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Instruction (CJCSI) 6130.01D, 2007, CJCSI 6140.01, Nov 1998, and GPU 09-071, Aug 2009.
