MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR A
High Power Single Spatial Mode Laser
2018 DEC 12
GENERAL
AFIT requires a new high power single spatial mode laser system to conduct lethality, hollow core fiber laser, and fiber laser beam combination experiments in order to setup a new high power capability for AFIT’s Center for Directed Energy. This high power laser system would be used in concert with our high speed infrared imagers, hyperspectral imagers, and other diagnostic equipment already in house.
The minimum requirements for the high power laser system shall include:
1. Optical Power: The high power laser system (“laser system”) shall be able to achieve a total optical power output of at least 2.5 kWatts, and be adjustable form 10-100% of total power, and have at least a +/- 2% stability at 1.065-1.075 um in single mode operation.
2. Electrical power: The available power in the lab is single phase 110 V, single phase 208 V, three-phase 208 V, and three-phase 480 V, the complete device including chillers shall be able to function using these connections.
3. Beam Quality: The beam quality of the laser shall have an m-squared of 1.25 or better.
4. Climate Control: The laser system shall include a climate control system that can keep the laser system at a steady temperature in a laboratory environment with temperature fluctuations from 60 F to 90 F.
5. Chillers: The laser system shall include all necessary chillers.
6. Diode source and cooling: The laser diode shall be t-bar diode pumped modules that are passively cooled and interchangeable to allow for single diode replacements as needed. The laser system shall include all optic cooling systems required for operation.
7. Power Meter: The laser system shall include a power meter that can measure the full power range of the laser system. (Please see Item 1)
8. Back Reflection Safety: The laser system shall be back-reflection proof so it cannot be damaged by back-reflections during experiments.
9. Alignment: A pilot laser system shall be included to allow for easy alignment.
10. Safety: The laser system shall include methods for safety if fiber breakage occurs and shall be ISO or EN 13849 accredited.
11. Mounting Hardware: The laser system shall include all mounting hardware for the power supply, controller, fiber delivery system, and fiber collimator. The controller and/or power supply shall include casters for easy transportation.
12. Size: The fiber system dimensions shall be 800 x 1000 x 600 mm (L x W x H) in size or smaller.
13. Remote Operation: The laser system shall have software development kits and drivers to allow for full control of the laser system, for example in MATLAB or Python. A hand held unit for remote operation shall also be included.
14. Control System: The laser system shall include all hardware, firmware, drivers, hand held control units, & software needed for operation.
15. Documentation: Full documentation for maintaining, operating, and repairing the laser system, including all control software, shall be included.
16. Updates: Future software updates shall be made available to AFIT as they become available free of additional charges.
17. Installation & Training: The laser system shall include a complete user guide for all operations. A complete maintenance manual for all repairs shall be included.
PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE
The customer shall receive all components within 6 months after contract award.
DELIVERY
The contractor shall deliver hardware to:
Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Wright Patterson AFB, OH 45433
WARRANTY
Laser system shall be free from defects in material and workmanship, under normal and proper use in accordance with our instructions in the maintenance manual, for the period of time of one year after receipt.
PAYMENTS
"100% payment (IAW Wide Area Workflow procedures) after completion of delivery, installation, and training."
