REMARKS

Touse, Robert JNAME: 09 DEC 2014DATE:

ES reviewed for currency. asset is an ESS assembly.

Farley, Danny LNAME: 02 FEB 2010DATE:

The Energy Storage System (ESS) is a hardened, electromagnetically-shielded cabinet in the Level 1 Launch Eequipment Room (LER-1). The existing facility power is insufficient for operation of the Fast B-Plug system. The purpose of the ESS is to provide the additional power necessary for Fast B-Plug operation in the presence or absence of facility power (minimum of 2 raise/lower cycles in the absence of facility power). One cycle is defined as raising the Secondary Door from the lowered position to the fully raised position and then returning it to the lowered position. The ESS is a modified, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) item (Pentadyne VSS-120) that stores electrical energy received from the Motor Drive Cabinet (MDC) as kinetic energy in a carbon fiber flywheel. The ESS converts the stored kinetic energy when needed to maintain system voltage levels. When the secondary door is lowered, the EMA motor, in conjunction with the motor drive, acts as a generator, converting downward motion of the Secondary Door into electrical energy (regeneration) to charge the ESS
