DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
76TH MAINTENANCE WING (AFMC) TINKER AIR FORCE BASE OKLAHOMA
1 December 2016
MEMORANDUM FOR AFSC/PZIMA
FROM: OC-ALC/OBCA
SUBJECT: Request for Brand Name Purchase of A17-008 Replacement Spray Gun Tips.
1. Graco brand Pro XP Air Assist Electronic Spray Guns are currently being used at Tinker AFB by the E-3/ Services Flight, to apply paints and primers to all aircraft and related parts during depot-level re-painting processes. Operations are accomplished in buildings 3225 and 2280, involving three shifts and all weapon systems within OC-ALC undergoing PDM.
2. Without the one thousand four hundred forty replacement parts, the guns become inoperable. Graco Technical Support (Shawn Intech) stated that there are no know tips that are compatible with the H85T10 Electrostatic Spray Guns and Graco will not guarantee the operation of these guns with another brand of spray tips. The 566th AMXS stated that if the application of a paint system on an aircraft due had to be repainted it would cost $165,614.40 or more depending on the aircraft that was painted with the incompatible tips. Graco Tips have been used for more than 13 years without issue at Tinker AFB and the introduction of another brand would insert an unstable variable into a proven process.
3. Currently the only Brand that will interface with the H85T10 Electrostatic Spray Guns is Graco Inc.
4. Until such time that a new spray system that will allow a universal tip to be used it is unlikely that the need for brand name can be avoided in the future.
5. The Subject Matter Expert for this purchase is Daniel Smith 405-736-3019 566AMXS Services.
