DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE

9TH AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE SQUADRON (ACC) BEALE AIR FORCE BASE, CALIFORNIA

25 July 2017

MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD TO: 9 CONS/LGCB

FROM: 9 AMXS/CCRA

SUBJECT: Statement of Need for Vertical Lift Carousels

1. Purpose: 9 AMXS currently has vertical lift modules (VLM) and vertical lift carousels that are experiencing consistent service issues (1 of 4 being completely inoperable), which cause disruption to AMXS services. The last time the current units went down, it took six (6) days to bring it back online. Current units do not have a manual override to provide access to parts/tools during a malfunction which causes additional delay and stress on support mission ability to be completed. The new units will require less floor space than the current lift system, while still providing better storage density. The capacity increase and space reduction is achieved by the general design of a vertical carousel which does not loose interior space due to a center column for the extractor or access window.

2. Requirements - Vertical Lift Carousel: AMXS requires two different types of lifts and carousels. Due to the specialized nature of the vertical lift carousel, AMXS requires a single unit which consists of 28 carriers that are 104.3"wide x 24"deep x 18"high with a 1433 pounds capacity. The carriers will provide a clear carrier height of 15.71" with an overall unit height of 24'- 0.8" high. There will be 4 carriers that will have 1 intermediate shelf making two levels in each carrier at 7.62" I 7.66". The split carrier level will provide 32 shelflevels 104.3"wide x 24.7"deep. The unit will have a 132" wide x 12.6"deep stainless steel work surface at 39.37" :from the finished floor.

3. Requirements - Vertical Lift Module: In addition, AMXS requires three (3) each vertical lift modules which consist of 23 trays that are 96"wide x 34"deep with a 794 pounds capacity. The trays will provide an average tray spacing of 18.7" with an overall unit height of 24'-1.37" high. The trays will be placed in 1" increments that will allow for storage density and flexibility. The vertical lift system will have a manual hinged extraction table to make product retrieval easier for personnel. The shuttle will come with a 5 year warranty including 2 preventative maintenance calls per year. This warranty will include all parts and labor. The new unit will fit

same footprint as the current vertical lift module. Shipping and installation costs to be included m pnce.

4. Detailed Requirements - Vertical Lift Carousel: All units must be clip system panel concept for fast assembly/disassemble and for maintenance purposes allowing for high operator security in the even that stored goods fall inside the unit. All Vertical Carousels shall come with a lifetime warranty of the motor to assure years of reliable usage. All other components carry a 2 year warranty, including transportation, parts and labor. Vertical Carousels shall come equipped with an Emergency Hand Crank for access to parts in case of power failure, or unit malfunction. Vertical Carousels shall come equipped with a multifunctional profile allowing flexible fitment and positioning of operator panel, lighting and accessories above access opening. Vertical Carousels shall come equipped with a stainless steel table surface at a standing position. Vertical Carousels shall come equipped with a lockable lightweight one piece sliding door. Self counterbalanced sliding door can be opened and closed with minimal effort. Two-piece sliding doors without counterbalance are not acceptable. Vertical Carousels must have a 100% Reliable Safety Security System. Vertical Carousels shall come equipped with finger protection safety buffer at rear of posting board. Vertical Carousels must be designed to accept transport rollers for fast and easy repositioning in the case of internal moves, providing maximum flexibility for unit positioning with minimum downtime and reinstallation costs. Vertical Carousels must have standard manual override systems allowing for the unit to be used until service technician's repair. Vertical Carousels must have a standard manual override that can be operated with the door open, so parts can be located using "drive and view'', without having to know what carrier the part is stored on.

5. Detailed Requirements - Vertical Lift Modules: In addition, AMXS requires 3 each Vertical Lift Modules. All units must be modular construction, built up from the inside to allow for easy height upgrades. All components carry a 2 year warranty, including transportation, parts and labor. The extractor shall be driven by a steel belted tooth drive system with 6 points of contact (for durability and proper alignment/guidance of the extractor). The steel belted tooth drive system must meet a minimum of 10:1 safety factor. The extractors design shall eliminate tilting/skewing of shelves/containers during movement. The drive belt is required for noise reduction and multiple points of fully engaged contact with the drive sprockets. Chain driven systems are not acceptable. The vertical lift must be equipped with a central extractor guidance system with a minimum of 10 rollers. The vertical lift must come with an automatic security door for safety and designed to prevent dirt and dust from entering the unit while not in operation. An operator station shall be provided that is easy to use, to store/retrieve stored parts. This can be a pendant or other easy to use keyboard/operator station. The system shall have soft starts and stops. The operator work surface height shall be approximately 33 inches, and have the ability to accommodate maximum media storage of 28.75". The storage unit must have an

ergonomic tray/tray delivery height selection from the operator console. Shelf spacing must be adjustable on approximate I" increments to allow for maximum use of vertical space. The VLM must be equipped with Medium capacity trays. The VLM shall have 23 trays with a capacity of 794lbs. Self-monitoring full height LVS light curtain shall be installed at the operator access opening. This shall provide safety features that protect the operator from injury when the shelf/container is moving. This feature shall stop the shelf/container from moving, when an operator's hand/arm is in danger of injury. Other safety features shall have redundant systems, and fail-safe overrides to ensure continuous operation and minimum system down time. Unit must include a manual hinged table. Vertical Lift must have energy saving standby mode which switches all electrical consumers into "sleep" mode when not being used. Vertical Lift operator will be informed if a predefined overload is reached - early warning. Ifthis limit is exceeded, the device will be positioned onto the next possible shelf - switch off.

6. General Scope: The contractor shall provide all supervision, labor, materials and equipment to remove one (1) existing lift unit and install one (1) new Vertical Carousel and remove three

(3) existing VLM and install three (3) new VLMs to support this requirement. The contractor must ensure the equipment complies with DIN EN 15095 "Power-operated mobile racking and shelving, carousels and storage lifts" and has been tested and certified by TOV (Technical Observation and Control), a USA NRTL and Canadian CB.
