BUILDING 160 FENCE - SITE VISIT QUESTIONS

1. Where is the location of the actual fence going? I know it states some are plated and some are set in grade, but it still doesn’t specify where the actual fence going. The fence is going around each of the walkway areas that go into the facilities first floor. See map attached to the solicitation.

2. Is it attached to the actual railing? Or set right beside it. As close as possible to the existing rails. You may use brackets to clamp to the existing rails as long as the fence is totally secure as if the poles are in concrete in the ground. No welding of posts to existing rail due the possibility of Lead Based paint on the existing rail.

3. It states some sizes for posts, but the only posts it list are 2” minimum in diameter. Are all posts 2”? Or just the intermediate posts? The corner posts are generally either 2-3/8” O.D. or they are 2-7/8” O.D., can we get this clarified? And there no other weights or specifications for any of the other materials on this project. I am assuming that it will be like a standard military installation, although most of the time those are braced & trussed with 3/8” diameter truss rods from the first line post, back to the termination points. But that is not necessarily the case in a 4’ tall fence. And especially since the posts are 6’ apart. Stay with 2 inch all the way around.

4. If the posts are plated, will the plates and everything have to be coated like the rest of the materials? Because without a visit and knowing the actual percentage of grade change for each site, the posts would have to be anchored on site first and the posts welded to the anchored plates level & plumb. Obviously that is not coated, but would require them to be touched up with matching touch up paint from the factory. If plates are used they will have to match the existing brown color of the fence, rail and posts.

5. As per specifications in 3.1.1. the materials shall be vinyl coated in dark brown. There are two types of coating, there is framework that is polyester coated (powder coated) the color and then there is Heavy Mil coating. Again, referring to question #3. Either are acceptable as long as the colors all match.

6. Would polyester coating (powder coating) be acceptable? By going with this method, you would be able to anchor the plates down and weld the posts on to them without having the distinct area of where the vinyl coating had been trimmed back to allow the posts to be welded, so that it wouldn’t bubble up from the heat of welding. And then primed & touched up with the factory touch up paint. I believe the brown is just a standard chocolate color I believe. Is this acceptable? Yes as long as the paint colors match the polyester coating.

7. As far as the expansion anchors, would “Hilti” ½” x 6” KWIK HUS anchors be acceptable? Yes, as long as the posts are anchored as if they were in concrete.

8. I made a mistake yesterday. You are allowed to drill into the existing sidewalk and anchor your posts the conventional way as long they are set in concrete and the concrete is finished to match the existing sidewalk area. That would eliminate the need of plates and anchors.
