The B220 Itemizer is used across all Naval Nuclear Laboratory sites. A comparative evaluation of Trace Detection Systems at an Entry Control Point was conducted in October 2016. The evaluation revealed that the B220 itemizer has a quick hot sample recovery time of 73 seconds compared to similar brands that took one hour due to needing multiple cleanings between samples. Secondly, the threshold for detection on the IONSCAN 600 is higher in three of four areas, resulting in the probability of detection being greatly reduced. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory site at NPTU Charleston uses the B220 itemizer for training to keep its processes standard with other naval nuclear laboratory sites, allowing the site to continue building a broad knowledge base on the equipment while delivering quick problem resolution and increased training effectiveness. Lastly, because the B220 itemizers are used at all other naval nuclear laboratory sites, this allows them to be interchangeable when a temporary replacement is needed during repairs.

Training would not be needed in a replacement situation thus alleviating possible lapses in daily operations.
