SYNTHETIC ATHLETIC SURFACING (SPORTS TURF)

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION

A. Work Included

1. Furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary to install all artificial grass field turf for a 99,321 square foot area. The installation of all new materials shall be performed in strict accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions and in accordance with all approved shop drawings. Complete installation of the Synthetic Athletic Surfacing shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

a) Site preparation of area to receive new synthetic athletic surfacing in strict accordance with recommendations of manufacturer.

b) The contractor shall be responsible for re-grading the existing base, this includes re-dressing stone base and repair of inadequate areas.

c) Provide and install geotextile fabric as required by the synthetic athletic surfacing manufacturer.

d) Turf must work with the existing drainage system. Drawings of the existing drainage system are attached.

2. Perimeter edge details required for the system shall be as detailed and recommended by the Manufacturer, and approved by the Government.

3. The contractor will be responsible for removal and disposal of the existing artificial turf system.

4. The new turf system shall be installed with a combination of SBR (tire crumb rubber used in artificial turf fields) and sand infill.

5. The contractor shall provide a logo that is 40’ x 40’ made up of 5 colors. Sample Logo is attached. The contractor shall confirm with 1SOFSS personnel that the logo is the correct and most recent version prior to stitching the logo as required by paragraph 1.1.(A)(9) of this section.

6. Flag football and soccer marking shall be provided.

7. The Turf System shall be Shaw Momentum HP 2.25 or equal. Any product provided shall meet the specifications detailed in this document as well as the salient characteristics provided below.

a. Grass height shall be less than or equal to 3 inches.

b. System weight shall be less than 10lbs per square foot for infill and shall be within the range of 33-50 40oz per square yard for grass.

c. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001 and 14001 Quality Assurance Certificate must be provided.

d. Occupational Health and Safety Assessment (OSHA) Series 18001 Quality Assurance Certificates may be provided.

8. A 50 yard line marking shall be provided.

9. All lines shall be stitched. The individual blades of artificial grass shall be the needed color to represent the logo and lines that are required.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Prior to ordering of materials:

1. The Contractor shall submit Shop Drawings indicating:

a) Field Layout

b) Field Marking Plan and details for the specified sports. Soccer and Flag Football Field Markings are requested.

c) Roll/Seaming Layout

d) Methods of attachment, field openings, and perimeter conditions B. Prior to Final Acceptance, the Contractor shall submit to the Government:

1. Three (3) copies of Maintenance Manuals, which will include all necessary instructions for the proper care and preventative maintenance of the synthetic turf system, including painting and markings.

2. Project Record Documents: record actual locations of seams, drains or other pertinent information.

3. Warranty: Submit Manufacturer Warranty and ensure that forms have been completed in the Government’s name and registered with Manufacturer.

1.4. QUALITY-ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Company specializing in performing the work of this section.

1. The Turf Contractor must provide competent workmen skilled in this specific type of synthetic grass installation, including sub-base.

2. The designated Supervisory Personnel on the project must be certified, in writing by the Turf Manufacturer, as competent in the installation of this material, including sewing or adhering seams per manufacturer’s specifications, and proper installation of the infill mixture.

B. Prior to the beginning of the installation, the Installer of the synthetic turf shall inspect the sub-base and accept in writing the sub-base surface planarity and compaction. The Installer shall have the dimensions of the field and locations for the markings measured by a registered surveyor to verify conformity to the specifications and applicable standards. A record of the finished field as-built measurements shall be made.

C. The Turf Contractor shall provide the necessary testing data to the government that the finished field meets the required shock attenuation, as per ASTM F1936.

1.5 PRE-INSTALLATION MEETING

A. Convene one week before starting work of this section.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND PROTECTION

A. Deliver products to project site in wrapped condition.

B. Store products under cover and elevated above ground.

1.7 WARRANTIES

A. Complete project closeout as specified.

B. The Turf Manufacturer shall provide a Warranty to the Government that covers defects in materials and workmanship of the turf for a period of at least 8 years, or the standard commercial warranty period, whichever is longer from BOD. The turf manufacturer must verify that their onsite representative has inspected the installation and that the work conforms to the manufacturer’s requirements.

C. The Turf Contractor shall provide a Warranty to the Government that covers defects in the installation workmanship, and further warrant that the installation was done in accordance with both the Manufacturer’s recommendations and any written directives of the Manufacturer’s onsite representative.

D. All turf warranties shall include all necessary materials, labor, transportation costs, and any other costs to complete repairs.

E. The artificial grass field turf must maintain an ASTM 355 G-max of between 125-200 for the life of the Warranty.

1.8 MAINTENANCE SERVICE

A. The Turf Contractor shall train the government’s facility maintenance staff in the use of the turf Manufacturer’s recommended groomer.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MATERIALS

A. The component materials of the artificial grass field turf system consist of:

1. A carpet made of polyethylene fibers tufted into a fibrous, porous backing.

2. An infill that is a controlled mixture of graded sand and rubber crumb that partially covers the carpet.

3. Glue, thread, paint, seaming fabric and other materials used to install and mark the artificial grass field.

B. The installed artificial grass shall meet or exceed the following properties:

Impact Attenuation, Gmax =< 200 over field life C. The Turf shall consist of fibers tufted into a primary backing and one or more secondary backings.

1. The Turf shall be furnished in 15’ wide rolls. Rolls shall be long enough to go from sideline to sideline without splicing. Head seams, other than at sidelines, will not be acceptable.

2. The Turf’s primary backing shall be a double-layered polypropylene fabric treated with UV inhibitors. The secondary backing shall consist of an application of porous, permanent system to lock the fibers in place.

3. The fiber shall be 8000 denier, low friction, UV-resistant fiber measuring not less than 2.25 inches high. The same fiber from the above listed projects must be used on this project. Systems with less than a 2.25 inch fiber and/or shock pad enhancements will not be accepted as equivalents.

D. The infill materials shall be approved by the Manufacturer. The infill shall consists of a resilient layered granular system, comprising selected and graded dust-free silica sand and hammer-milled SBR crumb rubber.

E. Thread for sewing or glue for seaming turf shall be as recommended by the synthetic turf manufacturer.

F. Glue and seaming fabric for inlaying lines and markings shall be as recommended by the synthetic turf manufacturer.

2.3 FIELD GROOMER

A. Supply a field groomer, which shall include a towing mechanism compatible with a field utility vehicle.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 GENERAL

A. The installation shall be performed in full compliance with approved shop drawings.

B. Only trained technicians, skilled in the installation of athletic caliber synthetic turf systems working under the direct supervision of the approved installer supervisors, shall undertake any cutting, sewing, gluing, shearing, topdressing, or brushing operations.

C. The designated supervisory personnel on the project must be certified, in writing by the turf manufacturer, as competent in the installation of this material, including seaming and proper installation of the infill mixture.

D. All designs, markings, layouts, and materials shall conform to all currently applicable rules and standards that male apply to this type of synthetic grass installation.

3.2 FIELD BASE

A. The specification utilized for the existing foundation is provided as an attachment. The foundation was placed to meet the requirements of the original turf and is an integral part of the permitted drainage system. Any changes to the existing foundation may require approval by the State or, depending on the complexity, re-permitted prior to construction.

3.3 CRUSHED FINISHING STONE

A. The final grade aggregate layer should not be more than 2 inches deep.

B. The final grade material must be sloped 0.5% from the center longitudinal axis towards the sidelines.

C. The final grade must be compacted in both directions to attain the specified compaction rate which is generally 95% standard Proctor.

D. The final grade of finishing stone shall not vary from the specified grade by more than ½” from design grade, nor by more than ¼” in 10’. Laser guided grading is required.

3.4 INSTALLATION

A. Install in accordance with Manufacturer’s instructions. The turf contractor shall strictly adhere to the installation procedures outlined under this section. Any variances from these requirements must be accepted in writing, by the Manufacturer’s onsite representative, and submitted to the Contracting Officer, verifying that the changes do not in any way affect the warranty. Infill material shall be approved by the Manufacturer and installed in accordance with the Manufacturer’s standard procedures.

B. The turf rolls are to be installed directly over the properly prepared aggregate base. Extreme care should be taken to avoid disturbing the aggregate base, both in regard to compaction and planarity. Any disturbances to the aggregate base shall be repaired before installing turf.

C. The full width rolls shall be laid out across the field. The turf shall be of sufficient length to permit full cross-field installation from sideline to sideline. No head or cross seams will be allowed in the main playing area between the sidelines. Utilize manufacturer’s procedures for sewing or gluing seams.

D. Seams shall be flat, tight, and permanent with no separation or fraying.

E. Infill materials shall be applied in numerous thin lifts as specified by manufacturer. The turf shall be brushed as the mixture is applied and installed to a depth determined by the manufacturer.

F. Synthetic turf shall be attached to the perimeter edge detail in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard procedures.

3.6 MARKINGS

A. The field will have inlaid or tufted markings as specified in site plan, to include endzone wording/color and midzone emblem. Color samples for the endzone wording and midzone emblem will be submitted to the contracting officer for approval.

3.7 CLEANING

A. Contractor shall provide all labor, supplies, and equipment as necessary for final cleaning of synthetic field, materials used to protect track, retention areas, and laydown area.

B. The contractor shall keep the area clean throughout the project.
