Questions-Clarifications Page 1 of 2

Questions/Clarifications

The following questions and issues were submitted via email at eflhd.contracts@dot.gov. The Government response or clarification is provided. The wording of the questions may have been revised and some questions have not been included. The Government’s direct response to the sender may also have been updated below for better clarity.

1. Are there any restrictions to work regarding any marine or wildlife. I.E. Fish spawning or oyster beds.

There are no work restrictions regarding marine or wildlife. However, the Contractor should still use best management practices to minimize any adverse affects in regards to turbidity and sediment control due to its potential affect on marine life and water quality.

2. On Page J-21 576.10 d/e, it asks for shop drawings for negative connections to steel and continuity checks and corrective action. Is this an error? I do not see anything for cathodic protection for these repairs.

Subsection 576.10 items (d) and (e) were removed in Amendment 1.

3. Do you have an elevation for "MSL" as shown in Bridge Drawing 2 of 7?

The mean sea level (MSL) elevation is approximately -0.17 ft. This has been added in Amendment 001.

4. In Detail A of Drawing 2 of 7, is this the only acceptable seam for the FRP Jackets? Will a tongue and groove joint be allowed?

Detail A is an example of an acceptable joint; alternate joints/jackets may be submitted to the CO for approval during construction according to Subsection 104.03. All jackets must conform to Subsections 576.05 and 725.29.

5. What is required for the epoxy coating that is found on the existing piles. Will this coating need to be removed in the jacketed portion of the pile?

If the coating is to be removed, at what elevation should it be removed to? Should a portion of the jacket overlap this coating?

Pile surface preparation specifications can be found in Subsection 576.11 of the SCR’s.

Questions-Clarifications Page 2 of 2

6. If the epoxy coating is well adhered to the pile, can it remain?

Yes.

7. Will a lay down area be provided for the contractor?

The Contractor’s staging area may be located be at a boat ramp off of Beach Access Road. This has been included in Amendment 001.

8. Will there be mooring for the floating equipment used to install the repairs?

The existing piles may be used for mooring equipment.

9. Could the pier bulkhead along the west abutment be used for mooring floating equipment?

The pier bulkhead along the west abutment may be used for mooring during seasonal high tides only.

10. 28” cones which are not used in Virginia (only 36” are permitted). I would appreciate any help that you can be as I’ve looked everywhere else.

The minimum height required for cones on this project is 28 inches; 36-inch cones may be used.
