DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATIONS
125 VOLT VALVE REGULATED LEAD ACIC – ABSORBED GLASS MAT
STORAGE BATTERY FOR GRANITE FALLS SUBSTATION, GRANITE FALLS, MN
RFQ 11WA093824
1. BATTERY RATINGS/REQUIREMENTS: The battery shall be a sealed, heavy-duty absorbed glass mat Valve Regulated Lead-Acid, stationary type. The battery will be designed for constant voltage charging in “float” service, with a demonstrated/proven/warranted float service life of at least 20 years. The battery shall have the following characteristics:
(a) The 125 volt switchgear battery shall consist of 58 cells, Deka Unigy II AVR95-15, or approved equivalent. The cells shall have a minimum nominal eight-hour rating to
1.75 volts per cell of at least 640 Ampere-hours. Each cell shall be in an individual jar.
The battery shall be designed for switchgear and control applications. External cable connection points shall be as specified in (f) below.
(b) The total size of the battery shall be no more than 48 inches total height, not including the terminal connections, shall be no more than 80 inches wide, and shall have a front–to-back depth of no more than 29 inches including safety guards. The battery shall be elevated from the floor surface by a minimum of 4 inches.
(c) Grids and Plates. All grid material must be 100% recyclable; therefore, battery shall not contain any amounts of cadmium or antimony. Grids must contain a minimum of 99.99% pure lead before alloying. Positive grids may only be alloyed with pure tin if necessary. Negative grids may only be alloyed with pure calcium if necessary. Plates must be separated with a fibrous glass mat, or equivalent.
(d) The individual cell enclosure is to be flame-retardant polypropylene with a LOI rating of 28% or greater. The battery shall allow a minimum ventilation space between cells of
0.500 inches between all cells. Individual cells must incorporate a method of allowing the positive plates to grow 8% of the initial size without buckling or deforming the plate or damaging the cell enclosure. Each cell must also incorporate a recombinant catalyst such as the Philadelphia Scientific Microcat ® or equivalent that acts to recombine hydrogen and oxygen within the cell.
(e) The nominal cell specific gravity shall be a maximum of 1.300 at 77 degrees F.
Designs incorporating a specific gravity, greater than 1.300, are not acceptable for this application.
(f) The rated float charge voltage shall have a range within 2.17 through 2.26 volts per cell. Float charging specifications must be between 130.0 and 131.5 VDC.
(g) Positive and negative battery terminations must be at the top of the battery.
Terminations must employ a method of connection with a standard NEMA connector of adequate ampacity to carry continuous current at a rate of C/1 (@ 1.75 V / cell) of the battery capacity.
(h) The battery shall be furnished with the following standard accessories.
(aa) inter-cell connectors and connector bolts
(bb) inter-rack cables and connectors as necessary
(cc) terminal plates – for main external cable POS & NEG connection to the terminal lugs (terminal lugs will be furnished and installed by Western’s personnel)
(dd) cell numbers
(ee) connector nuts and bolts
(ff) non-corrosive grease
(i) The battery shall be furnished with the following non-standard accessories.
(aa) clear flameproof insulating covers.
2. RACKS: Either standard galvanized steel racks or acid resistant painted steel racks are acceptable. Rails shall be covered with a flame retardant electrically insulating cover or coating. Each end of each rack shall be provided with a grounding bar.
The racks shall be qualified according to “UBC” seismic rating formerly applicable to Zone 0 or higher.
Two lead plated copper rack grounding bars per rack (4 bars total).
3. SPILL CONTAINMENT: Western will provide the spill containment system based on the drawings provided in (4.) below.
4. DRAWINGS AND DATA:

This documentation is required to verify compliance with respect to the specifications. Such documentation shall be clearly annotated to indicate the specific equipment proposed.
(aa) Catalog data sheets and instructions, including detailed ratings and cell dimensions, rack drawings, and warranty terms and conditions.
(b) Two sets of manufacturer's structural, installation, warranty terms and conditions, operation and maintenance instructions, and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) shall be shipped with the battery cells, racks and accessories. One additional set and an electronic copy (compact disk) shall be provided to the person below:
