About this file

This is a Special Notice (DARPA-SN-25-43) issued by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO) announcing a future program called Reengineering Enabling Sleep Transitions in Operationally Restrictive Environments (RESTORE). The notice provides public notification of additional research areas of interest, with the formal solicitation to be posted on sam.gov if released.

The RESTORE program aims to develop precision control of sleep macro- and micro-architectures to optimize cognitive performance for service members operating under 3-hour sleep restrictions during combat operations. Unlike civilian sleep treatments that focus on achieving 7-8 hours of normal sleep, this program will explore non-invasive neuromodulation technologies to increase sleep efficiency during restricted conditions (less than 3 hours in combat, less than 6 hours during regular duty). The notice includes information about DARPAConnect, a free resource for those new to DARPA or national security, which provides DARPA 101 materials and modules on proposal preparation at www.darpaconnect.us. Technical inquiries should be directed to Gregory Witkop, Program Manager, at RESTORE@darpa.mil.

DARPA-SN-25-43

Special Notice Future Program Announcement:

Reengineering Enabling Sleep Transitions in Operationally Restrictive Environments (RESTORE)

February 6, 2025

Future Program Announcement Special Notice DARPA-SN-25-43

Reengineering Enabling Sleep Transitions in Operationally Restrictive Environments (RESTORE) Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

Defense Sciences Office (DSO)

Technical POC: Gregory Witkop, Program Manager E-mail: RESTORE@darpa.mil

BACKGROUND:

The purpose of this Special Notice (SN) is to provide public notification of additional research areas of interest to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Defense Sciences Office (DSO), specifically for the contemplated forthcoming RESTORE program.

If released, the solicitation will be made available at https://sam.gov/.

PROGRAM GOALS:

The RESTORE program aims to demonstrate precision control of sleep macro- and micro-architectures to optimize cognitive performance following 3-hour sleep restriction commonly occurring in combat operations. Current civilian treatments are predicated on helping an individual with a sleep disorder achieve healthy, normative sleep by reducing time to sleep onset and awakenings during sleep and with a goal of achieving a fully restorative 7-to-8-hour night sleep. Service members’ responsibilities frequently result in less than 3 hours of sleep during combat and less than 6 hours during regular duty.

RESTORE will test the potential for recent advancements in non-invasive neuromodulation technologies and understanding of the importance of sleep micro-architectures to increase sleep efficiency for maintenance of cognitive performance under sleep-restricted conditions commonly faced by warfighters.

DARPACONNECT:

For those new to DARPA or national security, DARPA makes available a free, comprehensive resource via DARPAConnect on how to do business with the agency. In addition to DARPA 101 materials, relevant preparatory modules include “Making the Most of a Proposers Day” and “Understanding DARPA Broad Agency Announcements.” Registration and access are free at www.darpaconnect.us.

ADMINISTRATIVE:

This Special Notice is issued solely for information and program planning purposes and does not constitute a formal solicitation for proposals or white papers.
