Purchase Description
Statement of Need and Purpose:
The purpose is to procure an infrared laser-based imaging system for the Therapeutics Development Branch.
Background Information and Objective:
The Therapeutic Development Branch (TBD) within the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) requires a scanning imager capable of high-throughput detection of samples to meet the needs of the ongoing, multiple collaborative Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) and Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases (TRND) projects.
A new Infrared Imaging System will support the mission of TDB in several ways.
Accurate identification of molecular mechanisms, cellular targets and pathways are important for the discovery of effective therapeutic options. As well, phenotypic screening is a valuable tool in the drug discovery process. TDB employs these methods to screen for potential therapeutic options for rare diseases.
A device capable of imaging different mediums such as flat gels and membranes, cells in culture plates, and tissue sections will be highly advantageous in terms of time, resources, and efficiency. In addition, quick imaging and quantification of samples (such as IN/ON-cell imaging and RNAi analysis) will be an asset to optimize and validate screening assays. High quality, reproducible, unaltered publication ready images are essential for data transparency and accurate conclusions. A compatible software designed to quantify the images with validated normalization techniques is also needed.
For these purposes, an imager capable of high throughput scanning with high sensitivity (i.e. high signal to noise ratio) with fast acquisition times is required. An infrared imager will be ideal to visualize the targets of interest with minimal background autofluorescence, which is often observed in non-laser-based imaging systems. As well, by enabling multiplexing of samples, better accuracy can be achieved while minimizing steps.
