PART 3: EXECUTION
3.01 PREPARATION:
A. The subgrade shall be prepared in accordance with Section MT-02213 - Site
Grading.
3.02 INSTALLATION:
A. All aggregate base course materials shall have water added as required in
Section MT-02201 - Watering. The aggregate shall then be mixed and processed to produce a uniform blend of material before final placement.
After processing, the material shall be placed on the prepared subgrade in a uniform layer not exceeding 6 inches in compacted depth. The method of dumping and spreading shall be determined by the Contractor. The spread material shall be free of segregation.
3.03 COMPACTION:
A. Each layer of aggregate base shall be compacted to the full width by
MT-02233-3
means of compaction equipment suitable to the type and depth of material being compacted. Compaction of each layer shall continue until density of not less than 95 percent of the maximum dry density is achieved as determined by AASHTO T 99.
3.04 FINISHING:
A. The final layer of each aggregate base course material shall be finished with equipment capable of shaping and grading the finished surface within the tolerance specified below.
1. The finish grade surface will be checked for the required grades specified on the drawings by the Government with tolerances being ± 3-hundredths of an inch.
A. Units: The work described in this section will be measured and paid for by the cubic yard compacted in place for imported aggregate base material. Determination of quantities shall be as follows:
1. Loose Material hauled shall be weighed at a certified scale and tickets given to the Government.
2. Loose material hauled shall then be divided by the Loose Wet Density of the material to obtain the loose cubic yards delivered.
3. The loose cubic yards shall be divided by the Factor of 1.33 to obtain the compacted yards in place.
Factor Derivation:
25 percent shall be used for shrink and loss. 20% for shrink and 5% for loss.
Factor = 100% = 1.33 100%-25%
A. Payment: The accepted quantities will be paid for at the contract price per unit of measurement, respectively, for the pay item shown in the Bid Schedule. Price and payment shall be full compensation for furnishing and placing all materials, including all labor, equipment, tools, and incidentals necessary to complete the work described in this section.
