About this file
This document outlines salient characteristics for an acoustic backscatter sensor and references a related federal contract opportunity on the same topic. The salient characteristics describe the required specifications for six acoustic backscatter sensors to measure suspended sediment concentration in rivers and streams. Key requirements include an operating frequency of at least 8 MHz, a sample update rate of at least 1 Hz, concentration measurement capabilities from 1 mg/L to 30,000 mg/L with 0.5% resolution, size restrictions of no more than 2.0" in diameter by 13.5" long, compatibility with SDI-12, RS-232 and analog data formats, corrosion and biofouling resistance, 12 VDC power source compatibility, an operating temperature range of 0-30 degrees C, a depth rating of at least 100 meters, and inclusion of an underwater cable and connector. The referenced federal contract opportunity, solicitation number 140G0123Q0288 from the Department of the Interior US Geological Survey Office of Acquisitions and Grants, is to procure acoustic backscatter sensors meeting the outlined salient characteristics.

Salient Characteristics Special Order S23144
ACOUSTIC BACKSCATTER SENSOR
SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS:
6 Ea. Acoustic Backscatter Sensor:
1. Shall consist of a submersible acoustic backscatter instrument for measuring suspended sediment concentration at a point within a river, stream, or creek cross-section.
2. Shall have an acoustic backscatter concentration measurement range from at least 1 mg/L to 30,000 mg/L, with a resolution of 0.5% of reading, or better.
3. Shall have suspended sediment concentration accuracy of +/- 30% (for particle sizes 30 – 400 microns), or better.
4. Shall have an operating frequency of at least 8 MHz and a sample update rate of at least 1 Hz.
5. Shall be no larger than 2.0” in diameter x 13.5” long.
6. Shall be capable of outputting data in SDI-12, RS-232, and analog formats.
7. Shall include features, and be constructed of materials, that are resistant to biofouling and corrosion.
8. Shall be capable of being powered from an external 12 VDC (nominal) power source.
9. Shall be capable of operating over a range of temperatures from at least 0 to 30 degrees C.
10. Shall be capable of operating down to a depth of at least 100 meters and include an underwater cable/interface bulkhead connector.
