Statement of Work

Dalton Range Soil Texture Analyses

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Central Yukon Field Office (CYFO) ecology program has implemented a study designed to identify the unique geophysical characteristics of areas near the Dalton Highway. This is a request for analysis of soil texture and clay characterization as components of a larger effort to characterize soil characteristics and relate those characteristics to wildlife range utilization and potentially vegetation distribution.

Analysis shall include the following:

Clay speciation: Analysis will be conducted by powder X-ray diffraction analysis and semi-quantitative bulk sample analysis. Clay minerals identified by X-ray diffraction analysis will be reported and grouped into major (>30%), moderate (10-30%), minor (2-10%) and trace (<2%) amounts. Due to the poor crystallinity of clay minerals, separation of the clay fraction by centrifuge followed by a series of procedures (glycolation and high temperature heating) is necessary for identification of individual clay species. Mineral abundances for the bulk sample (in weight %) generated by RIR (or Rietveld) XRD analysis will be reconciled with a Whole Rock Analysis plus the analysis any other major elements contained in the sample and reported (Whole Rock Analysis by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy includes SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, K2O, CaO, MgO, Fe2O3, Cr2O3, MnO, TiO2, P2O5, V2O5 and LOI).

Soil texture analysis: Analysis will be performed using hydrometer analysis to calculate the percentage of sand, silt and clay in the inorganic fraction of soil. The method is based on Stoke’s law governing the rate of sedimentation of particles suspended in water.

The Contractor shall furnish all labor, equipment, supervision and administrative support necessary to provide the Laboratory Analysis and Reporting in accordance with all the Purchase Agreement clauses and attachments.

Background and Volume of Work: The 38 samples to be analyzed have been collected from randomly selected points as well as areas of high value wildlife habitat within the vicinity of Poss Mountain near the Dalton Highway.

Cost quotes provided by bidders must include a per sample cost (i.e. total cost for all soil analyses per soil sample). Any excess soil sample received by the vendor and not used for analysis will be retained until such time as the project lead authorizes disposal or authorizes the transport of the soil and water samples.

Place of Performance: A maximum of 38 soil samples will be received by the prospective vendor. There are no known locally available laboratories with the capacity for conducting these all of these analyses;

special equipment is needed for clay analyses.

Period of Performance:

Sample Collection Timeline:

38 soil samples have been collected.

Sample Ready Date:

Immediately, samples have been collected and are being appropriately stored.

Work Completion Date:

Work shall be completed as soon as possible, the deadline for work completion should be no later than December 1, 2020.

Standard turnaround time: Final results will be provided 3 months (or sooner) starting from the time of vendor receipt of samples.

Vendor Requirements: Vendors will be ISO-17025 accredited perform the service requested/offered.

Pricing schedule: As described above, prospective vendors are asked to provide a current price list for all soil analyses per sample (maximum sample size of 38 soil which may be reduced based on cost per sample depending on vendor prices).
