PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
256-Channel EEG system
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, EEG Section and SNB/FRNU
1. Statement of Need and Purpose:
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Electroencephalography (EEG) Section requires a brand name or equal Micromed Brain Quick LTM PLUS Line - 256 Channel EEG system both for its use and that of the NINDS Surgical Neurology Branch’s (SNB) Functional and Restorative Neurosurgery Unit (FRNU).
The EEG recording system that the EEG Section and FRNU currently use for clinical and research intracranial EEG recordings was manufactured by a company (Cervello) that no longer provides clinical and technical support. To continue their collaborative clinical and research activities, the EEG Section and FRNU need to purchase another recording system that will integrate with existing BlackRock hardware used for the FRNU’s research recordings. The system must use Brain Quick, the FRNU’s existing clinical review software.
2. Background Information and Objective:
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Federal focal point for health research. Its mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and apply that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.
The NINDS, which is an Institute within the NIH, seeks to reduce the burden of neurological disease through supporting and conducting basic, translational, and clinical research on the healthy and diseased nervous system, fostering the training of investigators in the basic and clinical neurosciences, and seeking better understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neurological disorders.
The EEG Section engages in collaborative research to better understand the pathophysiology of epilepsy and to advance the evaluation and treatment of patients with medically refractory epilepsy. This section uses neurophysiologic and neuroimaging techniques in close collaboration with the Clinical Epilepsy Section and the SNB to improve its ability to localize epileptic foci in preparation for possible surgical resection.
The FRNU is a part of the SNB and exploits the unique investigative opportunities provided by intracranial EEG recordings performed by the EEG
Section. Through use of recordings captured from epilepsy patients who are implanted with subdural and depth electrodes, the FRNU investigates the activation of cortical networks during memory encoding and recall.
The EEG Section will use the required EEG system to evaluate electrical signals within the brain of patients undergoing invasive (intracranial) monitoring for epilepsy surgery evaluation. The EEG Section will also use this system for clinical neurophysiological recordings of patients undergoing epilepsy surgery evaluation at the NIH Clinical Center.
It is essential that this system integrate with the FRNU’s existing BlackRock hardware so that it can concurrently record data for ongoing research activity. To ensure that the system meets all of the EEG Section and FRNU’s requirements, it must include, at a minimum, all of the salient characteristics listed below.
