About this file

This specifications document outlines requirements for WR-6 thermoelectric microcalorimeter standards to be procured by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The standards are needed to support research and measurement services in microwave power calibrations for 5G communication, spectrum sensing, and modulated-wave metrology. Three units are required initially with an option to purchase up to three additional units. Key specifications include an operating frequency range of 110-170 GHz, maximum input power of at least 20 dBm, thermopile sensitivity of at least 100 mV/W, dimensions less than 100x50x50 mm, and total mass less than 100g. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number NB6720102302197 for WR-6 thermoelectric microcalorimeter standards from the Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology. Response and award dates are not provided.

Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: WR-6 thermoelectric microcalorimeter standards

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory RF Technology Division (672) Guided Wave Electromagnetics Group (672.01)

General Statement of Need:

The Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) enables science and industry by providing essential measurement methods, instrumentation, and standards to support all phases of communications technology development, from fundamental characterization and discovery to production.

To support research and measurement services in microwave power calibrations, the Radio Frequency Technology Division in CTL requires WR-6 thermoelectric power sensor standards that are compatible with microcalorimeters. This instrumentation is needed for CTL to advance the state-of-the-art in microwave power measurements and to support 5G communication, spectrum sensing, and modulated-wave metrology.

Item Specifications and Quantities:

Item 1: WR-6 thermoelectric microcalorimeter standard Quantity: 3 Specifications: 1.1 to 1.13

Optional line items Item 2: WR-6 thermoelectric microcalorimeter standard Quantity: Option to purchase 1 to 3 additional units Specifications: 1.1 to 1.13

1.1. Shall have a WR-6 rectangular waveguide interface that is compliant with the precision-dowel interface IEEE 1785-2a, as specified in IEEE Std 1785.2-2016.

1.2. Shall have a minimal operating frequency range of 110 GHz to 170 GHz.

1.3. Shall have a radiofrequency (RF) termination with a small reflection coefficient magnitude throughout the operating frequency range. A reflection coefficient magnitude of less than 0.2 is ideal. Smaller reflection coefficient magnitudes are considered advantageous in comparison to larger reflection coefficient magnitudes.

1.4. The RF termination shall have a maximum input power of at least 20 dBm.

1.5. Shall have a DC heater with a maximum input power of at least 20 dBm.

1.6. The DC heater shall have a four-wire lead configuration.

1.7. The DC heater shall have a DC resistance in the range of 50 Ω to 2 kΩ.

1.8. Shall have a thermopile to sense heating from RF power dissipation with a sensitivity of at least 100 mV/W and a thermopile to sense heating from DC power dissipation with a sensitivity of at least 100 mV/W. Heating from both RF and DC power may be sensed with a single thermopile or with one thermopile for the RF termination and one for the DC heater. Higher sensitivity is considered advantageous in comparison to lower sensitivity.

1.9. Shall have a DC connector that allows direct electrical connections to the DC heater, the thermopile(s), and any auxiliary temperature sensors.

1.10. Low RF leakage from the standard throughout the operating frequency range is advantageous, with lower leakage considered advantageous in comparison to higher leakage. RF leakage at least 40 dBc below the RF input power is ideal.

1.11. If the standard contains active readout or data storage electronics, it shall be possible to operate the standard without supplying power to these electronics. The RF termination, DC heater, thermopile(s), and any auxiliary temperature sensors shall be operable without supplying power to active readout or data storage electronics.

1.12. Shall have dimensions of less than 100 mm × 50 mm × 50 mm (length × width × height).

1.13. Shall have a total mass of less than 100 g.
