About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NIST's requirement for a 2-Channel Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detector (SNSPD) System for the Quantum Optical Networking program. The procurement seeks one detector system with specific technical requirements, including >70% detection efficiency for 1300-1600 nm wavelengths, <50 ps FWHM jitter, maximum countrates of >10^7 counts/sec, and the ability to operate 24/7 at 110V/15A without water cooling. The system must be remotely operable through a quantum network, have a Python command library, and be rack-mountable.

The detector system is required for a quantum networking research project focused on entanglement distribution and stability, with a specific swapping experiment to demonstrate longer-distance transmission of entangled photons. Delivery is set for August 22, 2025, with a two-week lead time after order receipt. The system will be delivered to NIST's Gaithersburg, MD campus, initially deployed in Buildings 222 and 220. Payment is contingent upon installation, acceptance, and successful demonstration of technical requirements, with a full payment upon meeting all specified conditions. The contract includes warranty provisions for parts, labor, and returns.

STATEMENT OF WORK/REQUIREMENTS DOCUMENT

Title: Quantum Detector System

I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Quantum Optical Networking program in the Smart Connected Systems Division within the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) develops new measurement science, networking standards and best practices to enable industry and government agencies to gain confidence in this disruptive new network technology. The program focuses on technologies that have the potentials to become the new engines to power our increasing quality of life and economic competitiveness by fundamentally increasing the capabilities or changing the directions of future communications.

Quantum Optical Networking has the potential to fundamentally change network security and increase network and compute capacity. This technology has a sparkled-growing interest in academia, industry, and national security communities. Building scalable quantum-secured communication networks is one of the most important technological goals of the 21st century.

Harnessing quantum networking technologies will power our economic competitiveness and provide better communication security.

The quantum networking program research will address the core problem of entanglement distribution and stability by developing efficient and resilient protocols stacks to identify, distribute, manage and manipulate entangled photons and propose solutions that overcome environment-induced optical and quantum impairments such as destruction of their coherence.

One of the major deliverables of this program is a swapping experiment that will pave the way to quantum repeater protocols. This experiment cannot be executed without a 2-Channel Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detector (SNSPD) system.

Purpose/Objective: The purpose of this requirement is to provide mission critical hardware for Quantum Networks required to carry out a swapping experiment to demonstrated longer distance transmission of entangled photons.

II. SCOPE

The Contractor shall deliver a quantity of one (1) 2-Channel Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detector System, inclusive of FOB Destination delivery, installation, warranty and training, and option line items.

III. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
