About this file
This is a specifications document for a Carbon/Nitrogen Analyzer required by the USDA Agricultural Research Service, Plains Area, Agroecosystem Management Research Unit in Lincoln, Nebraska. The instrument must operate via high temperature combustion within a vertical steel tube and be capable of analyzing up to 1 gram of organic samples and 4 milliliters of aqueous samples. The analyzer requires a 90-position top-loading sampler with automated ash removal functionality, utilizing 5 milliliter open and reusable stainless-steel crucibles for sample feeding. The instrument must include a third furnace for catalytic post-combustion to ensure complete conversion of methane to carbon dioxide in high organic content samples, with a flow path designed to measure 100 percent of combusted nitrogen via thermal conductivity detector without gas splitting or chromatographic separation.
The specifications mandate high purity carrier gas requirements (99.995% pure helium or argon) and combustion oxygen (99.995% pure), with no additional gases required. The analyzer must utilize electronic mass flow controllers for both carrier gas and oxygen dosage regulation, with automated overdose recognition software limiting total oxygen consumption to under 0.5 liters per analysis. Nitrogen oxide reduction from NOx to N₂ and excess oxygen absorption must occur through heated tungsten chips in a separate heated tube. Detection is to be performed by a thermal conductivity detector with oxygen excess proof thermistor technology. This is solicitation 1232SA26Q0050, issued as a Request for Quotation for one unit, set-aside for small business concerns with a 750-employee size standard. Delivery is required to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln facility at 3720 East Campus Loop South, 251 Filley Hall.

SPECIFICATIONS
Carbon/Nitrogen Analyzer
The USDA, ARS, Plains Area (PA), Agroecosystem Management Research Unit (AMRU), Lincoln, NE location requires the following:
· Instrument must operate by high temperature combustion inside a vertical steel tube
· Instrument must be capable of analyzing up to 1 g of organic sample and 4 mL of aqueous sample
· Instrument must have an integrated 90 position top loading sampler for automated ash removal
· Sample feeding should be performed using 5 mL open and reusable stainless-steel crucibles
· Instrument must contain a third furnace for catalytic post-combustion to ensure complete conversion of CH4 → CO2 in high organic content samples
· Instrument flow path must be designed to allow measurement of 100% of combusted nitrogen via a thermal conductivity detector (TCD) without “gas splitting” or chromatographic separation
· Gas requirements: high purity (99.995% pure) helium or argon carrier gas and oxygen (99.995% pure) for combustion. No other gases should be required.
· Instrument must utilize a helium or argon carrier gas flow via an electronic mass flow controller (MFC) between furnace and detector to allow for calibration stability over several months or years
· Oxygen dosage should be regulated by an electronic flow controller (MFC) with automated over-dose recognition software. Total oxygen consumption must be kept to under 0.5 L of O2 per analysis
· Reduction of nitrogen oxides from NOx → N2 and absorption of excess oxygen must be performed by passing the analyte gas through heated tungsten chips in a heated tube separate from the main combustion tube
· Analyte detection must be performed by a TCD with oxygen excess proof thermistor technology
· The TCD must have a detection limit of <100 ppm
· Instrument must contain an effective three-stage water removal flow path: condenser, membrane dryer, and chemical dryer
· Instrument control and data collection should be performed by a standard personal computer (PC) operating Microsoft Windows®
· Operating software should include automatic calculations as well as statistical evaluations for sample results. Other software features should include an automatic leak check program, automatic sleep/wake-up functions, service and maintenance support, and weight transfer from an external balance
· All instrument functions, including gas flows and pressures, must be capable of being digitally controlled for remote diagnostics via the internet
· Data files must be saved in a format that is exportable and readable by Microsoft Excel®. Exportation of data to Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) must also be available upon request
· Instrument must have the electrical capacity to operate with 110 and 240 VAC input power
· Instrument must come standard with 10-year furnace and TCD cell warranties.
· Total bench-space usage must be less than 24 inches in width
· For safety, the entire instrument (including furnaces) must internally operate on less than 50 V
