CUIS Attachment 11: Icehouse Space Allocation Plan 051921

Ice House Museum

Existing Condition: Older exhibits and associated lighting in an historic building (adaptive reuse); challenging environmental conditions as it is located in a marine environment, is in an unconditioned building, and is unstaffed. There is one primary space, with an accessible entrance (approximately 782.5 square feet). A much smaller secondary space (approximately 95 square feet) is separated from the primary space by a raised threshold (and stairs lead from the exterior to the secondary space, making it inaccessible to visitors using wheelchairs). Note: 877.5 total approximate square footage is based on quick measurement; needs to be verified for any exhibit scope of work/space allocation plan (Park to check for any existing As Built drawings).

Accessible entrance to primary space Stairs leading to secondary space

Recommendation: Move identification signage to accessible entrance to: 1) indicate that this is the primary entrance that is accessible, and 2) to provide more opportunity for an arrival experience.

Views of current exhibits in the Ice House Museum

Existing Condition: Current exhibits feature mix of historic images and objects in cases.

Recommendation: Increase tactile and low-tech interactive opportunities for visitors; harsh environmental conditions limit use of electronics in space.

View to archeology vignette seen below the floor in the primary exhibit space

Existing Condition: A key feature is the exposed archeology vignette seen below the floor in the approximate center of the primary exhibit area; a barrier surrounds the vignette area.

Recommendation: During Schematic Design 1, specify that at least one of the three schematic alternatives consider how to retain this feature.

View from primary exhibit space into smaller secondary space

Existing Condition: Smaller secondary space that has raised threshold.

Recommendation: Park mentioned idea of featuring an ice house historical vignette in the space (that could be viewed from the primary exhibit area), interpreting how the building was used traditionally.
