About this file

This statement of work outlines geotechnical engineering studies required for three aquatic organism passage structure sites located along Forest Service Road 578 in the Hermosa Creek watershed of the San Juan National Forest in Colorado. Field exploration will include exploratory borings at each location with standard penetration tests and laboratory testing of soil samples. A geotechnical report is required with recommendations for suitable foundation systems, design parameters, and construction. Pricing is line item based for each study location. Proposals are due by an unspecified date in 2023 with work to be completed by September 1, 2023. The related solicitation was issued by the Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

Hermosa AOP Geotech San Juan National Forest

CONTRACT #: TBD

Statement of Work (SOW) – Hermosa AOP Geotech

San Juan National Forest Durango, CO FY23 Project

Created By:

Cody Jones - COR Civil Engineering Technician – USFS – Durango, CO cody.j.jones@usda.gov ; 970-799-0215 April 2023 Project Location:

Hermosa Creek Area, Columbine Ranger District, SJNF, Rocky Mountain Region Scope of Contract

Background

Three Aquatic Organism Passage (AOP) structures are planned to be installed in the Hermosa Creek Watershed. Geotechnical Engineering Studies of these sites will be needed to assist in design characteristics for these structures. The location of these structures can general be described as 1: The roads stream intersection of NFSR 578 and the Main Stem of Hermosa Creek 2: The roads stream intersection of NFSR 578 and Sig Creek 3: The roads stream intersection of NFSR 578 and Relay Creek.

Figure 1: Map – Site location Map

Directions to Site

The site locations can be accessed from Durango, CO by traveling north on US 550 for approximately 27 miles to Purgatory Mountain Resort. Drive through Purgatory Mountain Resort to the Forest Service boundary and gate of NFSR 578 -Hermosa Park, at milepost 0.5. Stay on NFSR 578 for 3.7 miles. Keep left at the intersection of NFSR 578 and NFSR 580 – Relay Creek. Continue on NFSR 578 approximately 3.28 miles to Sig Creek, 4.25 miles to Relay Creek, and 6.54 miles to the Main Stem of Hermosa creek.

Requirements of Geotech Analysis

General

· The contractor should expect to implement temporary traffic control at each site as these locations are associated with road stream crossings.

· The contractor may draft water at each location for boring needs.

· The contractor may return coring discharge water back into the creek.

Work Item Descriptions – Each location will require the following:

Field Exploration - Explore subsurface conditions by completing exploratory borings.

· Minimum two borings total: one per bridge abutment.

· Depth of borings should be a minimum of 5-feet or to practical auger refusal. If bedrock is encountered, the rock should be cored a minimum of 10 feet.

· Perform Standard Penetration Tests (SPT) at regular intervals within each boring.

· Provide latitude, longitude, and ground surface elevation at each boring location.

· Observe and record groundwater levels during drilling.

· Backfill borings in accordance with local requirements and industry standards.

Laboratory Testing - Representative soil samples should be tested to determine engineering characteristics at the direction of a geotechnical engineer.

· Laboratory testing should include.

· Visual and USCS Classification

· Moisture Contents

· Grain size analysis and Atterburg Limits

· Compaction Testing

· Soil corrosivity testing including pH, resistivity, and sulfate content.

· Unconfined compressive strengths of soil and rock (if applicable)

· Shear strengths of soil and rock (if applicable) Geotechnical Report - A geotechnical report will be submitted that includes.

· Description of site geology

· Borings logs containing

· Classification of soil layers

· Elevations of each soil boring

· Groundwater levels encountered.

· Depth to bedrock

· SPT or RQD values

· Laboratory testing results.

· Recommendations for suitable foundation system and geotechnical engineering design parameters

· Spread footings.

· Allowable bearing capacity

· Sliding resistance

· Deep foundations

· Recommendation on minimum diameter and depth

· Minimum pier to pier spacing.

· End bearing values.

· Skin friction values

· Lateral analysis

· Estimated immediate, long-term, and differential foundation settlements.

· Seismic site classification and design parameters

· Lateral earth pressures

· Recommendations for expansive soils (if applicable)

· Scour analysis.

· Recommendations for foundation construction

· Subgrade preparation and earthwork recommendations

· Site grading and drainage recommendations

Pre-Bid/Pre-Proposal Conference

General Info

There will be NO pre-bid conference for this project. The project’s target start date will be in June or July of 2023 depending on site availability and runoff. Reports should be submitted by 9/01/2023.
