Speech and Language Therapy Services
Period August 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021
Pine Springs Day School – Scope of Work
Hybrid in Person and Teletherapy Model
Provide Speech and Language Therapy Services to identified Special Education students of those referred for possible Special Education services attending Pine Springs Day School. Services will be provided in accordance with P.L.108-446, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 as specified in the student IEP.
Purpose: Our speech language pathologists (SLP) have a good understanding of how to perform the services of SLP working in the school setting.
● They will provide services helping children with delays or disabilities in the areas of receptive and expressive language development, pragmatics/functional communication, auditory comprehension, pre-literacy and literacy, voice, fluency, articulation, and oral motor/feeding that impact their ability to participate at school.
● They will provide services in a consultative, pull out, or in class model depending on the IEP team decision of what is optimal for each child.
● The SLP has the skills to work one on one with students as needed to help teach them the skills they need to be more independent in the educational environment. A preference for one on one services will be given this year with on-site services scheduled every other week to help students make gains after the difficulty of the pandemic.
● The therapist will work in collaboration with the educational team providing services that are identified in the Individual Education Program (IEP)
● The therapist will help develop goals that are appropriate for each child and that will help improve the child's ability to learn. The SLP will work in collaboration with the team to identify areas that the teachers, staff and parents consider are most important for each child.
● The therapist will provide direct treatment using a teletherapy platform such as Zoom/Google
Classroom when providing services remotely. The platform will be secure and will be able to be used on a standard laptop or desktop with a microphone and camera. A space in the resource room will be designated and monitored by the resource teacher.
● The therapist will provide in-person visits an average of every other week to provide direct therapy and evaluate students and collaborate with current students and staff.
o Make prior arrangements with the school’s Special Education Coordinator and Teacher to develop a schedule to assess referred students; The Special Education Coordinator in collaboration with the Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) will schedule screenings and evaluations upon request of the school and within the expected timelines.
o Screen and Evaluate at Pine Springs Day School: The SLP will complete screenings for students referred by the school’s Child Study Team. Evaluations will be completed, when results of screening indicate a need for additional information or when determined necessary by the
Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team.
● The evaluation will consist of standardized and non-standardized evaluation tools provided by the contractor.
● Evaluations may include the following:
o Oral and Written Language Scales (OWLS), Receptive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test
(ROWPVT),
o Expressive One Word Picture Vocabulary Test (EOWPVT), o Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals- Fourth Edition (CELF-4), o Functional Communication Profile-Revised, o Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation (GFTA-2), o Khan-Lewis Phonological Analysis-2, Test of Language Development- Primary, 3rd Edition
(TOLD:P-3) and Pre-School Language Scale-4 (PLS-4).
o Non-standardized tests, classroom observations, teacher/parent report, informal speech/language and pragmatic observation and informal voice and fluency sample may be used to assist in determining eligibility.
● Provide a comprehensive evaluation report:
o Evaluations reports will be comprehensive reporting results from standardized and non-standardized assessments.
o The SLPs will determine from test results as well as feedback from the Multidisciplinary
Evaluation Team if the student will qualify for therapy and make recommendations to the educational team.
● Provide a comprehensive evaluation report:
o Attend meetings to explain assessment to parents and multi-disciplinary team;
o The SLPs will attend Multidisciplinary Team meetings as scheduling permits.
o The SLP will work with the coordinator and family to schedule meetings during her scheduled on-site visits.
o Evaluation results will be explained to the parents and multidisciplinary team by the therapist.
o Results will be presented in language that will be easy to comprehend and related to developmental and school performance.
o Appropriate paperwork will be completed to qualify students using the school’s NASIS special education module forms only.
● Keep in contact with Special Education Coordinator and teacher at Pine Springs Day School:
o The SLP will communicate directly with the special education coordinator and special education teacher will be kept informed of planned visits, cancellations, and scheduled meetings.
o The SLP will function as the case manager for students who qualify as Speech Language
Impairment and communicate with the Coordinator in preparing documents in NASIS.
● Provide Speech Language Therapy services individually or to small groups of identified students:
o The SLPs will provide these services on a regular schedule in cooperation with the students’ teachers and other service providers.
o Services will be provided at Pine Springs Day School weekly/bi-weekly depending on the school schedule.
o Services will be provided by Certified Speech Language Pathologists.
o Services will be provided in accordance with the student’s IEP which will specify the number of minutes per week or month and method of delivery (direct/consultative, group/individual, pull-out/inclusive). The information will be kept on Pine Springs Day Schools required service logs, as mandated by District.
o The therapist will keep detailed treatment notes in their digital medical records system in case
Pine Springs Day School should ever need an additional log of services provided.
o Speech language therapy approaches may include, but are not limited to receptive and expressive language development, pragmatics/functional communication, auditory comprehension, pre-literacy and literacy, voice, fluency, articulation, and oral motor/feeding.
o Consultation with classroom staff and parents will also be provided. Follow-up activities would be provided to special education and/or classroom staff to reinforce goals and objectives.
o In-service training for school staff and parents will also be arranged.
o The SLPs will report on progress, complete the schools service logs for each visit for attendance and enter progress reports into NASIS. The SLPs will consult with appropriate team members and community agencies as needed.
● Attend IEP meetings:
o The SLPs will attend IEP meetings as scheduling permits and complete relevant portions of the
IEP including Present Level of Performance, Goals and Objectives, and Service time.
o Parents will be provided with a Prior Written Notice by the SLP for any program changes.
o For students that qualify as Speech Language Impairment only, the SLP will collaborate with the special education coordinator who is the case manager for all students.
o The SLP will work with the coordinator who will function as the case manager and schedule IEP meetings with the school staff and families.
● Provide Arizona Certification and background clearance to Pine Springs Day School.
o The SLPs will have Arizona Certification, federal background clearance and the BIE Federal
Information Systems Security Awareness (FISSA) Certification to access the Native American
Student Information System (NASIS) special education module. They will be willing to collaborate with the school to get the BIE background clearance.
