Statement of Work for Consultant for MAFCL's food composition and nutrient content of foods

Statement of Work The objective of this award is to procure specialized nutrient analysis and related travel services for the USDA-ARS Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory (MAFCL) in Beltsville, MD.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Methods and Application of Food Composition Laboratory (MAFCL) provides information on the nutrient composition of foods consumed in the U.S. as a free, publicly released database - FoodData Central (FDC). FDC data are important to the nutrition research community and the food industry as they are used as the source of nutrient information for key nutrition research studies such as the NHANES "What We Eat in America" survey. The data provide valuable variability information, as well. MAFCL strives to maintain currency of its nutrient information by conducting analytical studies. Results of these studies provide current and accurate estimates for FDC data.

MAFCL studies are being conducted or are anticipated for the iodine, purines, nitrate, and nitrite content of foods, and for the nutrient content of beef, lamb, poultry, game, processed meats, dairy, seafood, and eggs. MAFCL continues to need a professional nutrition research consultant to develop and maintain collaborations with researchers within industry, university, and government and to design, conduct, and coordinate analytical studies of specific food components and of animal-based food studies at MAFCL assuring that research protocols are followed in all aspects of the studies. MAFCL needs this professional to document the studies' procedures and results in the form of scientific manuscripts, reports, abstracts, posters, and databases. The procedures used include sample collection, cooking, processing for nutrient analyses, statistical applications, reporting results for each nutrient within each treatment (raw and cooked), and investigation of nutrient variability due to animal husbandry and fisheries management practices, weather or seasonal conditions, feed, breed/species, geography, etc. Furthermore, the consultant is needed to conduct data analysis, prepare datasets for the nutrient database, provide MAFCL data in response to inquiries from scientists and the public, and provide tools and other applications of the data. The consultant is also needed to prepare and present research results at professional meetings and for publication.

This contract will be issued as a firm, fixed-price service contract for a Base Period of one-year plus two (2) one-year option periods. All option periods are pending availability of funding.
