About this file
This document outlines specifications for GPS tracking collars to be used in an elk movement study by the Bureau of Land Management Royal Gorge Field Office and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The collars must reliably collect data for at least 5 years while being highly resistant to mechanical damage and environmental effects. They must be well-suited to elk with flexible length adjustment and include both GPS and VHF transmitters as well as mortality and temperature sensors. The collars must also be able to communicate data to biologists via the Globalstar satellite network. A warranty of at least two years is required for the electronic components. Compatible software must be the GPS Plus X system used by Vectronics to interface with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 140L1723Q0032 for BLM-CO ELK GPS TRACKING COLLARS through the Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management Colorado Region. Specifications indicate the collars must meet long-term reliability needs for an elk movement study to be conducted jointly with Colorado wildlife management officials.

Specifications for
SATELLITE-ENABLED GPS ELK TRACKING COLLAR
The BLM Royal Gorge Field Office (RGFO) wildlife program seeks to purchase GPS collars for elk to collaborate on an Elk Movement, Migration and Seasonal Distribution Study with Colorado Parks and
Wildlife (CPW). Below are the necessary specifications for GPS collars used in the study.
Attribute Necessary specifications
Reliability Reliable data collection over at least 5 years is necessary to accurately depict the processes being investigated. Collars must be highly resistant to mechanical damage and environmental effects. Electronic components must be well engineered for long deployment lifetime. Battery life of over 5 years is required.
Design/Shape Collars must be well suited to large herbivores with wide variability in neck circumference and shape. One lower housing will facilitate fitting collars on elk. Must be highly flexible in length adjustment.
Transmitters/Sensors Both GPS and VHF transmitters are required to be on each collar. Mortality and temperature sensors are also required.
Satellite Communication Collars must be able to remotely communicate data to biologists from the animal via a satellite network. The Globalstar satellite network provides this functionality.
Warranty At least a 2 year warranty for the electronic components of the collars will help ensure they function over the necessary time period.
Software compatibility The software used by the collar manufacturer to communicate with GPS collars and receive data must be compatible with that currently used. The GPS Plus X software used by Vectronics is the only software currently compatible with that used by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
