About this file
This document outlines the minimum requirements and specifications for a federal solicitation seeking a RIEGL VZ-2000i LiDAR system with software and accessories. The Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Pacific West Area of the Department of Agriculture seeks to purchase a LiDAR system capable of accurately reconstructing three-dimensional plant canopy structures at a range of 2500 meters or greater, with 5mm or better accuracy and a 100x360 degree view angle. The system must operate at a laser pulse repetition rate up to 1.2mHz with Class 1 eye safety, acquire up to 500,000 measurements per second, and include user-friendly interface and apps developed in Python software. Additional required accessories include a scanner and camera carry case, battery charging station and batteries, on-site training, a carbon fiber tripod, and reflective targets. The solicitation number for this opportunity is 12905B23Q0132.

Minimum Requirements and Specifica ons RIEGL VZ-2000i with So ware and Accessories
Background:
The LiDAR, which is one of the most cu ng-edge tools to reconstruct plant canopies in three dimensions, will be used to scan vineyards and orchards for the purpose of improving model simula ons on radia on transfer, photosynthesis, transpira on, and water use efficiency. The fieldwork consists of taking various scans in mul ple vineyards and orchards that are under study to have detailed point cloud data of the unique canopy structure within each. The measurements will capture changes in leaf angle distribu on during the growing season and will support the efforts of scaling biophysical processes from the leaf to the landscape level.
The Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems (USDA ARS SAWS) unit, under NP 211, focuses on improving irriga on efficiency and advancing specialty crop system understanding under a changing California climate. The purchase of this LiDAR system will provide a tool capable of quan fying crop biophysical parameters that we have not previously been able to quan fy, advancing our knowledge of the rela onship between water and specialty crops.
Below are the minimum requirements and specifica ons to obtain reliable and accurate reconstructed plant canopies in three dimensions.
