STATEMENT OF NEED

(Brand Name or Equal)

GENERAL: C.W. Bill Young (Bay Pines) VA Healthcare System, 10000 Bay Pines Blvd, Bay Pines, Florida 33744, Research & Development Service has a requirement for a Brand Name or Equal Medikors’ InAlyzer2 M/S DEXA Body Composition Analyzer.

BACKGROUND: Metabolism researchers commonly use small animals as subjects for investigations of genetics, cellular physiology, and of agents affecting bone or soft-tissue composition. Bone densitometry and body composition measurement using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), eliminate the need for destructive chemical analysis – a time and labor-consuming process that requires days or weeks to complete. The research group will be examining whole body development analysis, body fat mass analysis, and bone density/mineralization analysis.

PURPOSE: This Scanning system will support the biomedical research program at Bay Pines and allow researchers to produce images for analysis and publication.

SCOPE: Bay Pines is requesting this equipment for use in the biomedical laboratories.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: Equipment must have the physical characteristics to enable the government to perform the following capabilities:

· Scan Area: at least 140 x 210mm (5.5 x 8.2 in)

· X-ray Generator: 80keV, 1.25 mA (max., Fan Beam)

· X-ray Detector: 108x108um pixel x pixel

· Dimensions: less than 30 in x 20 in x 30 in, capable of being placed on a laboratory benchtop counter

· Weight: less than 300 lbs

· Capable of scanning mice

· Shielded for radiation safety

· Digital Radiography for X-ray imaging

· DXA function for BMD and Body Composition

· Total results and ROI based measurements

· Reference Phantom

· Calibration Phantom

· Windows Based Computer with 4 GB Ram, 1 TB Hard Drive, Intel Processor

TRAINING: 1-2 Day training provided by vendor

WARRANTY OF EQUIPMENT: Government requirement for standard manufacturer industry warranty term. Government does not accept extended warranty, which requires advance payment.

DELIVERY SCHEDULE: All items to be delivered and or installed within 30 days of purchase order processing and order placement.
