About this file
This Requirements / Specification Document is for a Tunable Telecom Laser requested by the Communications Technology Laboratory's Radio Frequency Technology Division Highspeed Measurements Group at NIST. The document details the procurement of a single ultra-low noise, widely tunable, fiber-coupled, single frequency laser system with a nominal wavelength of 1532 nm, specifically designed for quantum networking device development. Key technical requirements include a frequency noise floor less than 20 Hz/Hz1/2 at 1 MHz offset, a tuning range of at least 10 nm, an instantaneous optical linewidth less than 1 kHz, and a short-term linewidth less than 10 kHz. The laser must have mode-hop free tuning, a single-mode polarization-maintaining fiber delivery system, optical isolation greater than 45 dB, optical power over 80 mW, and a high-speed locking system. Delivery will be to NIST-Boulder, with a 21-business-day acceptance period for performance testing, and the base manufacturer's warranty is acceptable.

Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: Tunable Telecom Laser
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Highspeed Measurements Group
General Statement of Need:
The product to be procured is an ultra-low noise, widely tunable, fiber coupled, single frequency laser system with a nominal wavelength of 1532 nm, which will be essential for the operation of telecom-ready quantum networking devices being developed at NIST. As part of the quantum networking project within CTL, these NIST devices, require a laser acting as the coherent pump tone to achieve quantum operation. The high mechanical stability of the required optical cavities and fixed absorption wavelength of the required materials place the demand on the operating laser that can be tuned into resonance with both systems. The laser to be acquired by NIST must have good optical performance such that these networking devices designed at NIST can be successfully operated and tested for their quantum characteristics.
The primary technical requirement is a frequency noise floor which is less than 20 Hz/Hz1/2 at 1 MHz offset frequency because this noise is directly coupled into the transducer, mimics a signal, and limits it from achieving the purity of quantum operation. The second technical requirement is a wide tuning range of at least 10 nm, which allows the laser to achieve resonance with partially and fully fixed transducer cavity designs. The third technical requirement is an instantaneous optical linewidth of less than 1 kHz and a short-term linewidth of less than 10 kHz (5 microsecond interval). The fourth technical requirement is a high-speed electronic system for phase locking to the transducer, or compatibility with an external locking circuit. Additional specifications are noted below.
