About this file
This Requirements / Specification Document details a technical procurement for a Fast Tracking Dual-Comb Spectrometer for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), specifically for the Communications Technology Laboratory's Fiber Sources and Applications Group. The document outlines requirements for an optical laser system with two mutually coherent, controllable laser frequency comb sources and a common coherent continuous wave laser, focused on developing precision ranging and timing technologies for potential future space operations.
Key technical specifications include a compact 4U rack-mount system with less than 100W power consumption, two fully self-referenced fiber frequency combs capable of fast phase-coherent tuning, and the ability to shift optical and carrier-envelope-offset lock frequencies by +/- 15 MHz in 10 microseconds. The system must maintain phase lock over temperature and humidity changes, with output optical connectors using FC/APC bulkhead (PM 1550) and frequency combs producing 15 mW in a 10 nm bandwidth centered at 1560 nm. The procurement emphasizes low size-weight-and-power (SWAP) and a potential path to space qualification, with the system intended for tracking very fast moving targets in a tracking oscillator configuration.

Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: Fast Tracking Dual-Comb Spectrometer
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory Spectrum Technology and Research Division Fiber Sources and Applications Group (675.02)
General Statement of Need:
The Fiber Sources and Applications group is developing methods for precision ranging and timing over free space based on frequency combs. The critical technology for future fielded systems will be high performance, dual-frequency comb systems. In addition to achieving low relative phase noise by phase-locking to a common continuous wave laser, this dual comb system must also have low size-weight-and-power (SWAP) and the potential for future space operation.
To this end, the group requires an optical laser system that includes two mutually coherent, controllable, laser frequency comb sources, along with a common coherent continuous wave laser. This effort focuses on the optics package, including the femtosecond laser, carrier-envelope-offset frequency generation, photodetection units, pump lasers and necessary temperature control/tuning. The system does not include the feedback control electronics. In particular the combs will be used in a tracking oscillator configuration and will be tracking very fast moving targets. As such they will require fast, phase coherent tuning of CEO and optical lock frequencies and phase coherent tuning of the optical lock frequencies to track an cw laser that might move by up to 20 GHz.
Item Specifications and Quantities:
Item 1: Fast Tracking Dual-Comb Quantity: 1 Specifications: 1.1 Exclude digital control electronics
1.2 Two fully self-referenced fiber frequency combs (i.e. CEO locked and can be also locked to a common narrow linewidth continuous wave laser that is not included in this purchase)
1.3 Thermal control of the frequency combs optics package
1.4 The ability to shift optical and CEO lock frequencies by +/- 15 MHz in 10 microseconds.
1.5 The ability to remain coherently phase-locked to a cw laser that as its frequency is shifted by as much as 20 GHz over a timeframe as short as 120 seconds. All while maintaining a coherent CEO lock.
1.6 fully integrated pump laser diodes and associated drive electronics
1.7 All actuators required to phase lock the two frequency combs and maintain phase lock over +/-10oC temp changes and 50% humidity changes.
1.8 This system is intended of demonstrations potentially leading to a space environment deployment. The system does not have to be space qualified but a viable path to space qualification should be demonstrated.
1.9 Additional requirements are delineated in Table 1 below.

Notes:
1) Excludes the secondary electronics board with the pump diodes and associated drive electronics.
2) Calculated by multiplying required DC voltage and current during normal operation, including specified outside temperature range.
4) Phase noise calculated by integration of the power spectral density from Fourier frequency of 1 Hz to 1 MHz.
5) Signal generated by heterodyne overlap between the two frequency comb outputs, with a set carrier offset frequency and at a known difference in repetition frequency. This cross-correlation, or interferogram, signal can be Hilbert-transformed to yield a peak voltage. All secondary interference signals should be suppressed below the given specification.
