About this file
This document outlines the salient characteristics for a cableway gaging system solicitation. The solicitation seeks a portable, remote-controlled cableway towing system to facilitate discharge measurements at rivers and streams. The system must include a carriage/hoist/electric motor assembly and wireless remote control to move, lower, and position acoustic Doppler current profilers or radars from the riverbank. It must operate on steel cables between 10-14mm in diameter, by wireless remote at up to 0.6m/s, and measure distance with 0.01m resolution. The remote must have emergency stop and variable speed control, operate at 1,300ft range on 902-926MHz frequencies from rechargeable batteries, and charge internally. The hoist component requires mounting hardware, integral 15m synthetic rope, auto-stop safety feature, 110lb lifting capacity, and 12VDC power. The solicitation was issued by the Department of Interior's US Geological Survey Office of Acquisitions and Grants as number 140G0124Q0044 for a cableway gaging system.

Salient Characteristics Special Order S24036
CABLEWAY GAGING SYSTEM
Salient Characteristics
General:
1. System shall include heavy duty transport case(s) for all components.
2. Shall include safety features to prevent accidental detachment and reduce the risk of injury to field personnel.
3. Shall include a feature that “automatically” returns the carriage to the user, or home position if radio communication is lost.
4. Shall include a device for distance measurement across the stream.
5. Shall include a breakaway kit for safety purposes.
6. Shall have braking system feature that activates when unit is stationery and releases when remote control is switched off allowing manual retrieval.
7. Shall consist of a remote-controlled, self-propelled, portable cableway towing system for facilitating discharge measurements at rivers and streams.
8. Shall consist of a carriage/hoist/electric motor assembly and wireless remote control for moving, lowering, and positioning ADCP boats, or radars, from the riverbank.
9. Shall be capable of operating on steel cables with diameter no less than 10mm but no larger than 14 mm.
10. Shall be capable of operating from 12VDC external power and monitoring the carriage battery voltage/current draw.
11. Shall be capable of operating by wireless remote control.
12. Shall be capable of distance measurement resolution of at least 0.01 m (0.01 ft) resolution.
13. Shall be capable of being added to existing USGS cableways over rivers or steams for performing Acoustic
Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), or radar velocity, flow- and discharge measurements.
14. Shall be capable of adjustable traversing speeds up to at least 0.6 m/sec (2 ft/sec).
Wireless Remote Control:
15. Shall include an “emergency stop” switch/function for safety purposes and be capable of activating the horn, or other audible alert feature.
16. Shall include a backlit LCD user interface and LED indicators for communication and error conditions.
17. Shall have variable speed control capabilities for raising and lowering cable, forward and reverse control, and speed control.
18. Shall have a communication range of at least 1,300 ft (400 m) or better by line of sight.
19. Shall be portable and hand-held.
20. Shall be capable of operating in radio frequency range from 902 to 926 MHz.
21. Shall be capable of operating from rechargeable AA batteries and include a built-in charger.
Hoist:
22. Shall include necessary mounting hardware.
23. Shall include integral synthetic rope at least 15 m (49 ft).
24. Shall include an “auto-stop” feature for safety purposes.
25. Shall have a lifting capacity of at least 110 lbs.
26. Shall be capable of operating on 12VDC external power.
