INTRODUCTION

1. PURPOSE.

This technical manual provides information required for overhaul and testing of the variable stator actuator. The actuator is manufactured by Arkwin Industries Incorpo-rated, 686 Main Street, Westbury, NY 11590-5018, for use on GE aircraft engines. The variable stator actuator will be referred to as the actuator throughout this manual. All material in this manual applies to all actuators unless specified by part number.

2. SCOPE.

Chapter 1 through Chapter 8 of this manual provide over-haul and test procedures, and Chapter 9 contains an IPB. A table of contents provides chapter, paragraph title, and page number to help find information. A list of illustrations and a list of tables provide the number, title, and page number of illustrations and tables provided.

3. CHANGES TO THE TECHNICAL ORDER.

Recommendations for changes to this manual shall be submitted by an AFTO FORM 22, to AFLCMC/LPSLB, Tinker AFB, Oklahoma 73145-3031.

SAFETY SUMMARY

1. DEFINITIONS.

The following definition apply to WARNINGS, CAU- TIONS, and NOTES found throughout this publication:

WARNING

An operating or maintenance procedure, prac-tice, condition, statement, etc., which, if not strictly observed, could result in injury to or death of personnel.

CAUTION

An operating or maintenance procedure, prac-tice, condition, statement, etc., which, if not strictly observed, could result in damage to or destruction of equipment or loss of mission effectiveness.

NOTE

An essential operating or maintenance proce-dure, condition, or statement which must be highlighted.

2. GENERAL PRECAUTIONS.

The following are general safety precautions that are not related to any specific procedure and therefore do not appear elsewhere in this publication. These are precautions that personnel shall understand and apply during the vari-ous phases of equipment operation and maintenance.

3. KEEP AWAY FROM LIVE CIRCUITS.

Operating personnel shall think safety at all times. Do not replace components or make adjustments inside equipment with the electrical supply turned ON. Under certain condi-tions, danger may exist even when power control is in the OFF position due to charges retained by capacitors. To avoid injuries, always remove power, discharge, and ground a circuit before touching. Adhere to all lock out/tag out requirements.

4. DO NOT WEAR JEWELRY.

Remove rings, watches, and other metallic objects which cause shock or burn hazards.

5. FINGER RINGS.

Snagged finger rings have caused many serious injuries.

Unless specifically allowed by shop safety procedures, remove finger rings during all maintenance activity.

6. DO NOT SERVICE OR ADJUST ALONE.

Do not attempt internal service or adjustment of equipment unless another person capable of rendering aid and resusci-tation is present.

7. RESUSCITATION.

Personnel working with or near dangerous voltage shall be trained in modern methods of resuscitation. Information and training sources may be obtained from the Director of Base Medical Services.

8. LUBRICATING OIL/FUEL.

Lubricating oil/fuel in liquid, vapor, or mist form is flam-mable, irritating to the skin and respiratory tract, and poisonous in the digestive tract. Remove saturated clothing, wash skin well, do not swallow liquid, and do not breathe mist and vapors.

9. COMPRESSED AIR.

When using compressed air for cleaning, cooling, or dry-ing, do not exceed 30 PSIG. Wear eye protection and do not direct compressed air at self or others. If additional air pressure is required to dislodge foreign materials from parts, ensure that approved safety equipment is worn. Be sure that the increased air pressure is not detrimental or damaging to the parts before applying high-pressured jets of air.

10. DANGEROUS PRESSURES.

Pressure system precautions apply to all ranges of pressure.

Care shall be taken during testing to ensure all test connec-tions are proper and tight before applying pressure to test setup; all system components shall be compatible with pressure applied. Personnel shall be protected by a safety shield or located at a distance sufficient to prevent injury.

Change 10 v

11. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

(PPE).

Wear protective clothing/equipment (gloves, apron, eye protection, etc.) approved for the materials, procedures, and tools being used. Contact supervisor for guidance. If neces-sary, the Bioenvironmental Engineer or Base Safety Office should be contacted for guidance.
